West Hoosick FD Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast

The West Hoosick Fire Department announces an “All You Can Eat” Breakfast at the firehouse on Father’s Day Sunday, June 19, from 7:30 to 11 am. The firehouse is located on Pine Valley Road near the intersection of County Routes 109 and 103.  Please call the firehouse at 686-1814 with questions.

Wild Geraniums

Wild Geraniums are blooming in area woodlands. This wildflower is also called Crane’s Bill and has light purple, pink or white flowers. The roots were once used to stop bleeding and for relief from stomach sickness and other ailments. The powdered root was applied to canker sores. Photo by Trix Niernberger.

National Trails Day A Success

On Saturday, June 4, forty-five volunteers turned out to improve the trails at Grafton Lakes State Park and enjoy a day in the outdoors. The Taconic Hiking Club, Grafton Trail Riders, Capital MTB, Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park members, families and friends worked on six different trails throughout the Park. Downed trees from this year’s many windy storms were cut and cleared from trails; raking and trail marking were completed, and litter was gathered from shorelines.

George Retires, Gives The Farm To John F.

Wednesday, October 10, 1855: This forenoon John F and Edward Hatch worked with the Shakers’ jack on the cider house and this afternoon John F. returned said jack to the Shakers and paid 75 cts for the use.
Thursday: This forenoon I walked up to Alexander Ostrander and paid 37½ cts for three pounds lard.
Friday: I am quite lame and today is quite a rainy day. John F. and John Rafferty husked corn in the barn.
Saturday: Rainy. I got James M. Glass to butcher a sheep and had a half a forequarter of the meat to pay him. John F. unwell today.
Sunday: Today Geo P. returned from Vermont, he found his lost sheep. He bought four head young cattle but did not drive them nor the sheep. Today John Rafferty had my horse and wagon all night.
Wednesday: I am quite unwell. This day I offered John F. Holcomb one thousand dollars for his services or labor, what he has done for me from the time he was of age up to the time he took my farm off my hands and I give up having any concern of my business and he accepted my offer and I gave him a note to be paid out of my estate at my decease. Today John F. unwell but he tended to his work.
Thursday: I am quite unwell as before with the gravel and today all day John F. unwell, and E. Hatch and John Rafferty gathered apples and drove home from the Rodgers farm our one yoke oxen for they had got the fence down and got into the meadow and got to the corn, and they drove home two dry cows.

The Hoosick Falls Community Remembers

In Hoosick Falls during the last few weeks there has been a Village cleanup, and flags have been placed on the light poles. New stairs have been put on the gazebo in Wood Park and flower buckets have been filled along the streets. Flags have been placed on the graves of all the veterans buried in Hoosick Falls. Many of those veterans will soon have their names cast in bronze for plaques to be placed on the new Memorial Wall in Wood Park. The names on paper were placed on the Wall for Memorial Day for folks to review for the last time for changes and corrections.
