Daniel and Jessica Browe and their three children, Sara, 13, Tyler, 11, and Corinne, 9, were in Rensselaer watching the fireworks over the Hudson River on July 4 when they received a phone call no one wants to receive. Their house on Yerdon Road in Grafton was on fire. By the time they arrived, their home was a pile of smoldering rubble.

Mausert Resigns From HFCS Board

Hoosick Falls School Board Member Rye Mausert submitted his resignation prior to this week’s monthly meeting, and the Board accepted it at the meeting. Mausert was not present at the meeting and no information was offered as to why he resigned at this time.
The School Board is actively seeking people who might be interested in an appointment to this seat. Those who are interested are asked to send a letter of interest to the District Clerk.

Old Bridges Just Fade Away
Meredith Lukas Is A Finalist For School Girl Queen At The Columbia County Fair
Meredith Lukas is among six of Columbia County’s best and brightest young women who have been announced as finalists for the title of School Girl Queen by officials at the Columbia County Fair.
Lukas attends New Lebanon High School and is the daughter of Randolph and Carol Lukas of New Lebanon. Yearbook Club and class fund raisers are on her list of High School activities. She also enjoys teaching gymnastics and traveled to Ireland last summer on a Mission trip. This summer she is planning a trip to Peru.

Karen McGovern Volleyball Tournament
The eleventh annual Karen McGovern Memorial Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament will be held September 4 at the Sand Bar, Lyman St., Hoosick Falls. This event has raised over $120,000 to help our neighbors battling cancer and other serious illnesses.

Marian Lohnes Celebrates 100 Years

On Saturday, August 21, Marian Lohnes had a birthday party at the Hoosick Falls Fire House. Wearing a lovely dress and a corsage of yellow roses, she sat at a table of honor with her sister Laura Lohnes, who is a hundred and one. She greeted over 75 family and friends at the party. There were refreshments, balloons, cake, presents and a commendation from Rensselaer County and another from the Town of Hoosick. It was an exciting day for the centenarian and, according to her granddaughter Norma Cipperly, she really enjoyed it.

Georges Seurat And Erik Satie Featured In Berlin Library Finale

On Wednesday, August 11, the Berlin Free Town Library presented its Summer Reading Program Finale, “Go With The Flow.” This summer’s theme was “Make A Splash at Your Library.”
Over the last six weeks, 65 area children ages 3 to 18, parents and community volunteers took part in an art, theater and music production that brought to life Georges Seurat’s famous pointillist painting “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.”

On July 17 rain and 80 mile per hour winds whipped through Aqua Vista Campground in Petersburgh. “The weatherman told us the eye of the storm was right here,” said Lee Weliczka. She and her husband Mike Weliczka own and operate the campground with their little daughter Anika.
