Fire Leaves Residents Homeless
A fire that broke out just before 11 pm on Wednesday night at 313 Johnsonville Road will leave many homeless. Everyone was accounted for, according to the Fire Chief’s radio report to the County dispatch. As of press time there were no known injuries from the blaze and from the scene the house looks salvageable but has heavy fire, water and smoke damage. There was word that the Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced family members.
BCS Board Approves Budget

The Berlin Board of Education approved an $18,757,983 budget for the 2010-11 school year which reflects a 1.74% increase in the tax levy. The spending level, raised from the 2009-10 budget of $18,281,718 by $476,265, is driven by increases in salaries and benefits for 202 staff members. The major factor for planning the future budget was a $1.4 million dollar cut in State aid to the Berlin District in the Governor’s Proposal.

Rensselaer Plateau Forums

About 60 people attended a Community Forum on the future of the Rensselaer Plateau held Monday evening at the Stephentown Fire Hall. The Forum was sponsored by the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance, the Capital District Chapter of the New York Forest Owners Association, the Home Waters Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and the Black River Raiders Snowmobile Club.

Berlin Town Board Action – Spring In Berlin

Forget the swallows at Capistrano, the robins and the geese, you know spring has sprung in Berlin when an emu arrives. So winter ended on Sunday, March 28, at 5 pm when an emu helped itself to some food in Pam Gerstel’s bird feeder walked around onto her porch and then wandered north on Route 22 towards the village. Gerstel’s home is on Route 22 south of Berlin village, and it was reported that many motorists stopped to eyeball the emu.

Two From Eastern Rensselaer County Honored

At its meeting on Tuesday evening, the Rensselaer County Legislature passed two resolutions focussing on residents of Eastern Rensselaer County. One honored a girl from Grafton just starting on the road of life, whose future is full of possibilities. One remembered a Stephentown man whose travels have ended, who lived a life well spent, full of accomplishments and service for his community.

New Lebanon Board Questions Financial Report

The New Lebanon Town Board meeting began with a disagreement over Supervisor Meg Robertson’s Town financial report. The report summarizes the Town’s revenue and expenses, but Councilman Doug Clark was concerned that it inaccurately portrayed New Lebanon’s economic condition because the Town may be liable to pay $1.4m to close a local landfill. Unless Columbia County is persuaded or forced to assume responsibility, the Town will be held accountable. If so, residents’ taxes will skyrocket. Clark believes that the report is misleading and should have included this potential liability.

Hoosick Falls Board Action – Neighbors Complain About Pets And Cars

At the Hoosick Falls Village Board meeting on Tuesday, April 13, Patti and Bernie Zilinskas complained about the property at 1 School St. They told the Board they felt owner Bill Ingwersen was not living up to the Urban Development Project agreement he had with the Village. Ingwersen is converting the former VFW building into one single bedroom and four studio apartments, three on the first floor and two on the second floor. Part of the agreement was that there would be no pets in the building. The couple said Ingwersen himself brought a cat into the place. Hoosick Town Board Action – April 2010

The regular monthly Town of Hoosick Board meeting took place this past Monday, April 12, in the Hoosick Falls Armory with Supervisor Keith Cipperly calling the meeting to order at 7 pm. After the Pledge of Allegiance the minutes of last month’s Board meeting were approved. Councilmen Louis Schmigel, Mark Surdam, Bob Ryan and Jeff Wysocki were present, along with Town Clerk Sue Stradinger and the town attorney.
The Town Clerk’s report was accepted with 21 death certificates being of note. The Assessor’s report, by Tony Rice, was in order.
