Improv Night
On Friday, September 26, at 7:30 pm you will laugh so hard. That’s right; it’s the second annual Drama Club Improv Night. Starting at 7:30, students will improv situations similar to those on the popular TV show “Who’s line is it anyway.” Join us for the fun. Admission is $5 per person with free refreshments
Fall Fest
Next week, October 4, is the 16th annual Fall Fest at Berlin High School. Craft vendors, games, a coffee can auction and much more is fun for the whole family from 10 am to 3 pm.
Later, the Family Dance will be held at Berlin High School from 7:30 to 10 pm. Admission is $3. Glow necklaces are $2. Refreshments are free. Students under sixth grade must be accompanied by an adult.
Come to the 32nd Annual New Lebanon Soccer Tournament. New Lebanon is hosting the Lee, Berlin and Hoosic Valley Boys teams as well as the Chatham, Berlin and Hoosic Valley Girls teams. All these teams are playing great soccer this year. There has already been some really good soccer being played at the New Lebanon High School this year, and these games promise to be no different. The tournament will be played at the New Lebanon High School field.
There will also be baked goods, hot dishes and barbecue off the grill for very reasonable prices. Great soccer! Great food! Why go anywhere else?
Entrance at the gate is $2 per adult, $1 per child, per night.

HFCS PTA is proud to announce its featured raffle items for the eighth annual Fall Festival being held on Saturday, October 18, from 9 am to 3 pm at Hoosick Falls Central School.
Each year, the featured raffle items are always an event in themselves, and 2008 will be no exception – and the public can get a sneak peek at them prior to the Festival on October 6 at the community-wide open house at HFCS beginning at 6 pm and from October 8 to October 17 at the Hoosick Federal Credit Union.
The fabulous prizes are: a Will Moses print entitled “Snow in the Hills,”
custom framed by Peg Caron, a handmade quilt entitled “Split Decisions” by Sharon Messersmith, four prints by Warren Kimble called “Four Seasons,” framed in primitive Shaker black frames, and a Bennington Pottery bowl filled with dinner for a week (gift certificates from Bianca’s Pizza & Pasta, Falls Diner, Guiseppe’s Restaurant, Jean’s Place, John Street CafÄ, Olde Firehouse Tavern and Theresa’s Country Cuisine).

Tickets are $1 per or $5 for six and are available for purchase prior to the festival at the community-wide open house on October 6 and at the Grand Union on October 4, 5, 11 and 12, from 9 am to 3 pm.
This fun-filled event features crafters and vendors, games and activities for the kids, a cake walk, a bake sale, food and beverages, several raffles for adults and kids and much more! And new this year are a tag sale featuring good quality, reusable products and Animaland©, a chance for youngsters to stuff their own collectible animals. All proceeds from the Fall Festival help the PTA host family-oriented events, volunteer time in support of classroom activities, offer funding for countless programs and events.

Leo Bartoski won the 2008 Senior Net Tournament with a Net score of 69, Greg Zuke finished second with a net 71, Joe Crossman with net 72 finished third, followed by Dennis McEvoy’s Net 73.
The winner on the ladies’ side was Celia McEvoy with a Net score 71 which placed her five shots clear of Peg Crossman’s Net 76.
Cheney Library will host a story time for pre-schoolers and their caregivers beginning September 30 at 10 am. This story time will be held each Tuesday through November 4. We will be reading stories about animals and doing some simple yoga moves reflective of some of the animals. So come and experience the Lion’s Roar and Down Dog. We will have crafts and snacks as well.

Wednesday, June 19, 1850: This morning early I and Edward got our sheep home from my Rodgers farm to sheer and I got Geo P. oxen home and took them to a pasture on Philander Hatch land that Geo P. had hired. Today my two sons and Edward and Mr. Ostrander sheered sheep and Mr. Glass sheered half a day and they all sheered 105 sheep and 18 of them was Geo P.’s sheep and today I took the one horse wagon and rode to Pittsfield to Squ Gold’s to see what was to be done concerning the suit of Ross. I took of Gold a subpoena and subpoenaed Mr. Buel and paid him one dol and 48 cts and went up to Pontoosic to find Eveline Bert to notify or cite him to court, but found out that he was gone on west into York State. I took tea with his brother, a school boy where he was at school. I then returned home.
Thursday: This forenoon I and my two sons and Edwin hoed corn, and this afternoon rainy. This evening or towards night John f. took the one horse wagon and carried Mr. Walker the Blacksmith five bushels potatoes at 31 cts per and carried Mr. Jarvis one bushel and he credits the same on account 31 cents. This afternoon Geo P. rode to Hancock and paid in cash 75 cents for two barrels of ashes and had a pair thick shoes charged to Burrel’s shop at one dol 50 cents to be paid in potatoes. at 25 cts per bushel, and towards night Mr. Dean came and paid me the cash three dollars for two of the smallest of my pigs.
Monday: I took my one horse wagon and road to Pittsfield to Squ Gold’s concerning the suit with said Ross to Lenox this week. Brother F. Jay Wylie rode with me to the east part of the town to old Mr. Pool’s and Mr. Tracy’s to get proof concerning said trial but not any. I took dinner to said Wylie’s and his daughter Elisabeth rode home with me. I paid in Pittsfield 79 cents for 165 pounds of plaster.
Tuesday: I hoed carrots and plastered corn the second time, and went onto Hatch’s hill and salted Geo P. oxen. Tonight brother F. Jay Wylie came to let us know that the Ross trial is to be called on tomorrow, and he stayed with us tonight and brother Sylvester Holcomb stayed with us tonight. Today my two daughters went in the one horse wagon over to Mr. Canada’s to carry boosums to Troy, and they stopped at Doctor Dickson’s and charlotte paid him 25 cents to dig out a tooth, and cousin Elisabeth Wylie went with them.
Fall is just around the corner and Grafton Lakes State Park is gearing up for its 22nd Annual Barge Chaser Canoe and Kayak Race. The event will be held Sunday, September 28, with registration beginning at 10 am at the Beach Nature Center and the race at 11 am. The race, which is sponsored by the Northern New York Paddlers, is a day of friendly competition for the paddlers and fun for the whole family.
There are two courses for paddlers to choose from. The shorter course follows the three miles of shoreline around Long Pond with no portage. The longer course is seven miles altogether with sections on Long Pond and Second Pond including two short portages. There are classes separating canoes and kayaks, tandem or solo, age groups, gender and experience. Awards are given for first through third place.
The registration fee is $10 per person and $5 for participants under 18. Registration includes a potluck picnic after the races. Hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks will be provided, but please bring a salad or dessert to share.

Hoosick Falls – Mona Marie Thomson, 93, of Wood Park Lane, Hoosick Falls, NY, died on Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Petersburgh, NY, on March 19, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Alton Thomson and Eva Smith Watrous. She was the step-daughter of the late James Watrous.
Mona was educated in Petersburgh, Hoosick Falls and Rensselaer. She was a graduate of the Ritter School of Floral Design in Boston, MA. Mona had an independent and adventurous nature, trying her hand at numerous occupations including window dressing, floral design in Mt. Vernon, NY, and narrator on Shoreline Cruise Lines in Sarasota, FL. She also bought and sold antiques. She enjoyed traveling, taking her grandchildren to Hershey Park, PA, visiting old friends and spending the holidays with her daughter’s family. She was pre-deceased by an infant brother, Malcolm.
Survivors include her daughter, Audrey and husband Ronald Bartus of Petersburgh, a son, Dennis and wife Patricia Moon of Berlin, NY, grandchildren, Anthony and wife Linda Wescott, Dawn and husband William MacVeigh, Randy and Jerusha Jarvis, Sara and husband Ronald Bierwirth, Tracey and husband Melvin Teal, Holly, Jessica, Dennis and wife Margie and Jason Moon along with 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.
Funeral services were on Sunday, September 21, at the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh, where Rev. Trygve Tomlinson officiated. Interment followed in the Meadowlawn Cemetery.
