On Saturday night, October 24, tragedy struck Hoosick Falls. Kyle Redden, a 22 year-old resident of Hoosick Falls and Class of 2011 HFCS graduate, was struck and killed by a drunk driver as he was walking home from a party. Redden was taken to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center by the Hoosick Falls Rescue Squad. He died at the hospital. Faced with rising costs mandated on the Town that exceed the 0.7 percent state limit on increased spending this year, the Berlin Town Board met in a workshop session Thursday October 22 to hammer out a spending plan that addresses the Town’s needs without dramatically increasing the tax burden. What they settled on was a spending plan that totals $1,024,821 – $593,133 for the Highway Department, about $421,689 for the general fund, and about $10,000 for street lighting. Fire Prevention Day at BES
Students learned about fire safety, explored fire trucks and other firefighting equipment, and met some real life community heroes during Berlin Elementary School’s Fire Prevention Program October 7. All four fire departments in the Berlin Central School District were at the school to talk about fire prevention and share the many ways firefighters and EMTs help keep our communities safe.
