Volunteers Needed For Trails Clean-Up

National Trails Day is the perfect time to clean up local parks. On Saturday, June 6, the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park (GLSP) and Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center are hosting the 22nd Annual National Trails Day. Both parks invite volunteers of all ages to help clean up and improve trails on Saturday morning and indulge in the trail activities they enjoy most in the afternoon.

Registration  begins at 9 am at both parks; refreshments and snacks will be available. Cleanup and improvement of both trail systems will take place between 9 am and noon, followed by a complimentary barbecue picnic for all volunteers. After the barbecue, participants are encouraged to enjoy the trails and parks. Reservations must be made in advance for the barbecue. Call the GLSP Office or Dyken Pond Office no later than June 4. Upcoming Events At Bennington Battlefield, GLSP And Cherry Plain State Park

Saturday, May 23 –  Grafton Lakes State Park Beach Opens for The Season!  Open daily 10 am-6 pm through Labor Day! Gate fees are now $8/vehicle

Camping opens at Cherry Plain Memorial Day Weekend. Camping and swimming are weekends only until June 26, then daily through Labor Day.  Camping reservations available through www.reserveamerica.com. Gate fees are $7/vehicle.

4th Annual Geocache Challenge Begins in the Capitol Region! Using a hand-held GPS or smart phone App, go on a treasure hunt in your local state parks and historic sites! Free! Program will get you and the kids outside all summer! Call your local park for how to sign up!

Monday, May 25 – Memorial Day Sand Sculpture Contest from 12 to 3 pm. Register  at noon by the Beach Nature Center at Long Pond. Bring your shovels, props and your creativity as extra points are given for originality! Prizes for everyone!

Saturday, May 30 – Morning Bird Walk to the Dickinson Fire Tower at 7:30 am. Join local birder for a morning walk through the park’s forests, ending with spectacular views from above at the Dickinson Fire Tower. Meets at North Long Pond parking lot.  Pre-registration required: 279-1155.

Joseph Bromirski

Hoosick Falls – Joseph A. Bromirski 89, passed away on Saturday May 16, at the Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center. He resided on Rocky Lane in Bennington, VT.

Joseph was born on March 13, 1926, in Hoosick Falls, New York, son of the late Marcel and Cecelia (Kalivada) Bromirski. He graduated from Hoosick Falls High School. Joseph was a member of the National Guard Company C, formerly in Hoosick Falls. He was employed as a machinist at Reynolds Tool & Die in North Hoosick, NY and Coe Manufacturing in Tigard, Oregon. He and his daughter Susan lived in Oregon for twenty-two years before moving back to Bennington. Joseph was an avid bowler, bowling in leagues in Hoosick Falls, Bennington and Oregon. He raised beagle puppies at his parents’ farm. Joseph was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington. He was a baseball fan of the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox.

Survivors other than his daughter Susan of Bennington include several nieces and nephews. Joseph is predeceased by a sister Felice Grozine and two brothers Henry and Alexander Bromirski.

Funeral services will be Thursday May 21 at 11 am from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, New York. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 am until the start of the service. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hoosick Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to Diabetes Research or the Second Chance Animal Shelter of Shaftsbury, Vermont through the funeral home.

Richard Lefebvre

Hoosick Falls – Richard P. Lefebvre, 80, died on Tuesday morning May 12, 2015, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vermont. He resided on Hurley Street in Hoosick Falls, NY with his wife Pauline Lefebvre.

Richard was born on January 27, 1935, in Waterbury, Vermont, son of the late Francis and Cecile M. (Philippon) Lefebvre. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Sargents Association. Richard served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. Richard, for many years, delivered the Bennington Banner and the Troy Record throughout the area.

Survivors other than his wife Pauline include his five daughters Angela F. Nichols of Norfolk,VA, Brenda M. Davies, San Antonio, TX, Cynthia M. Henry, Manchester, VT, Diane T. Lefebvre, Buskirk, NY, Erica A. Lefebvre, Bennington, VT and one son Michael R. Lefebvre of Hoosick Falls, NY. Richard is also survived by a brother Donald Lefebvre of Swanton, VT and a sister Frances Ruggles of Morrisville, VT as well as 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Roger Lefebvre.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday May 16 at 10 am from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY. Burial will follow the mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.

Relatives and friends may call at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls,NY on Saturday from 8 to 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hoosick Area Church Association or the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad through the funeral home.

C. Donald Hawks

Eagle Bridge – C. Donald Hawks, 75, passed away on Thursday May 14, 2015 at his residence on Route 22. He was the husband of the late JoAnn (Marsh) Hawks who died in 2013.

Donald was born on November 3, 1939, in Cambridge, New York son of Charles and Gertrude (Sheffer) Hawks. He graduated from Hoosick Falls High School. Donald was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in Korea. He was employed at Delurey Sales & Service for twenty years and later for the Hoosick Falls Central School at their bus garage as a mechanic. Donald was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed vacations at Hampton Beach and Lake Lauderdale.

Survivors include his brother Jack (Belva) Hawks of Georgia, sisters-in-law Cherry Millington, of Texas, Patricia (Bill) Grennan of Hoosick Falls, NY, Kay (Howie) Wright of Cambridge, NY and Lori (Jeff) Gardner of Arizona, brother-in-law Donald (Karen) Marsh of Castleton, NY, also several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Center at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center through the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, who are handling the services.

Patsy Ruth Johnson

Berlin – Patsy Ruth Johnson, 65, passed away at her home on Friday, May 15, 2015.

Born in Fayetteville, NC, she was raised and educated there and moved to Berlin following her marriage to Leonard C. Johnson in 1966.

She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed watching hummingbirds, gardening and growing flowers.  She was a past member of the Berlin Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard; her daughter, Beverly (Ray) Weatherwax; her grandchildren, Britney and Blair Weatherwax; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30, at two o’clock in the First Baptist Church, Berlin, NY. The family will receive visitors at the church for two hours prior to the service, from noon to 2 pm. Pastor Matthew Olson of the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church will officiate.  A private interment will be held in the Berlin Baptist Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 in memory of Patsy Ruth Johnson.

Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home of Petersburgh is assisting the Johnson family.

The Life Of George Holcomb – George’s Wife Recovers; He Is Sued Over Pig Death

Sunday, April 26, 1835: Today Doctor Right came and he encourages to the amending of my wife’s health.

Tuesday: It was quite stormy with snow rain and a hard wind. It blew down fences. Today Mr. Lyman Kingman summoned me and my son Geo P to appear before Squ Strait on Monday next at nine in the morning on a case of tresspass, as he calls it, in favor of Henry Ostrander pretending that I dogged his hog and killed it.

Thursday: I ride up to Squ Nathan Howard’s and counciled with him concerning my suit with Ostrander and he has agreed to answer to my name on Monday to C. Moffitt’s and manage for me and I do agree to pay him fifty cts and if any more service or carry the suit through I am to pay one dol and 50 cts more.

Thursday: Today I collected the school tax of several in the district. My wife’s health does seem to be on a mend but quite a hard cough attend her.

Saturday: Today I went with my wagon and moved Peter Surdam into my house where Henry Ostrander moved from, and for moving him he agrees to pay me in work and to begin the second week in July and to work every other week.

Sunday: Today I took my wagon and rode up to Squ Nathan Howard’s and paid 12 cts for one pound honey for my wife a syrup.

Monday: Today Squ Nathan Howard ans to my suit in defence of Henry Ostrander concerning his hog drinking my brine I poured on the ground. He adjourned to the 13th of the month.

Wednesday: On this evening Hiram Newton rode up to Squ Nathan Howard’s and got me a line concerning my suit with Mr. Ostrander.

Sunday: I walked over to John Sackett and his son Ezra went with me and got some slippery elm for my wife. Towards night I rode up to Squ Nathan Howard’s to council with him concerning my suit with Henry Ostrander and I took my papers out of the post office. Tonight Eliza Wylie came to make our cheese this summer at one dol per. Wednesday: This forenoon I took my team and helped Peter Surdam draw apple brush from my orchard. This afternoon I took my wagon and rode over to Claudius Moffitt’s to defend case in a suit that Henry Ostrander sued me for tresspass on a hog. It did not come to a trial. We left it to arbitrators Squ Nathan Howard and Christopher Clifford.  They brought in that I should pay the Squires fees which was fifty cts and the Constable’s fees which was 62 cts and pay said Ostrander four dollars and that should settle the whole concern of the hog. I paid said Ostrander two dollars cash and told him that when he came and reckoned with me the other two dollars could come into the account, and I paid said Howard fifty cts for his tending to suit and I paid 12 cts for one pint brandy to treat with. Peter Surdam rode over with me for did expect him to be a witness for he see the hog drinking the brine. This morning Doctor Right youngest son died.

Malnourished Horses Taken From Owners In Berlin

On May 1, the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office received a tip regarding the welfare of two horses located at 23 South Main St. in the Town of Berlin. Deputies trained in animal cruelty responded to the location and observed a female Bay horse and female Chestnut horse.

Lockdown At Berlin School

On Wednesday May 6, according to a police report, a teacher at the Berlin Middle School/High School noticed that an eighth grade student was holding “what appeared to be rifle,” but was not pointing it at anyone.
