Saturday, March 14 – Backyard Maple Sugaring at 1pm.  Do you long to set up a family-scale syruping operation in your backyard? Join us for a short film, demo and samples of sap and fresh syrup.   $2/person and $5/family.

Saturday, March 21 – Backyard Maple Sugaring at 1pm.  Savor a delicious sign of Spring and learn how to make syrup in your backyard.  $2/person and $5/family.

The Life Of George Holcomb – Daughter Sarah Is Sick

Friday, September 12, 1834: Today Mother Holcomb is taken quite unwell and we called in Doc Right. He ordered castor oil for her.

Saturday: Today brother Sylvester went to Hoosic after sister Eleanor, for Mother is quite sick.

Sunday: Mother some better. Sylvester returned with Sister Eleanor from Hoosic

Wednesday: I went to training to Nassau to Searls and carried passengers.  My boys sold 40 cts worth apples and had half of it in cakes.

Saturday I worked on the highway with my tram and plow, which counts three days. This evening our youngest daughter Sarah Orelia is taken quite sick with a high fever and inflammation in the bowels.

Sunday: Today Sarah continues in great pain and this evening I rode over after Doc Graves but he was not to home. I got some sene of Doc Graves’ wife and returned home. When I got home I found my child growing more sick. I then went to Lebanon and got Doc Right and we returned at eleven this evening. Said Doctor applied draughts and gave calomel.

Monday: This morning I rode to Lebanon to Edwin A Griggs store and had one gallon molasses charged 44 cts and took orders of him to get loading in Troy, and then I rode to Hancock to Hosey Brown’s store to see if I could get loading to carry to Troy but I could not get any. I returned home and at noon I started for Troy after said Griggs loading. I got into Troy about dusk.  I sold two and a half bushels of potatoes to Meanax store at 37 cts per. I then took on twelve bushels salt and two cwt codfish at Malory and Hunter’s and two barrels of whiskey. I came out of Troy at ten this evening and traveled all night.  I came and went by the new road by Nassau Meeting House, and I got to Lebanon Tuesday morning to Edwin A. Griggs, I delivered my load and he credited four dol and fifty cts.

Wednesday: This morning I rode down after said Doc Right, for my child continues more unwell with a fever and severe pain in the bowels.

Thursday: I cut and put up stalks. The said Doctor Right tended to my child every day.

Friday: I rode to N. Nichols Store, my two sons rode with me. We went by way of Dr. Right’s to let him know the operation of the medicine. The child puked it up. The Doc gave orders not to give so large doses.

Saturday: I worked on the highway and finished working out my assessment.

Sunday: Today said Doc Right tended to my child and a little better.

Leo Surdam Matter Resolved

At the Hoosick Falls School Board meeting on February 12, Board President Greg Laurin read a short statement about the resolution of the case of District Bus Driver Leo Surdam, who was suspended after an incident on his bus December 8 in which he confronted two students over the way they were behaving towards a third, younger student on the bus. Berlin Town Board Action – Budget Do-Over

Berlin’s 2015 budget, adopted on November 13, was made official and legal at the Town Board meeting last Thursday. In an action called “Nunc pro tunc” (now for then), the Board passed a “Statement of Necessity” resolution that dispenses with the normal 30-day “seasoning” of a local law. Village Of Hoosick Falls Board Action – Possible Expansion Of Residency Requirements For Appointed Positions

The Hoosick Falls Village Board began its meeting on February 10 with a moment of silence in remembrance of Freddie Bouplon, Joseph Cullen and Justice Richard Whalen. Whalen was a Town and Village Justice and the Village Assessor. He was on vacation at the time of his passing and had provided coverage for his positions while he was away, said Mayor David Borge. In an effort to expand replacement possibilities for these positions, the Board approved a motion to hold a Public Hearing before the March 10 meeting. New Lebanon Town Board Action – Former Assistant Fire Chief Mark Sheline Recognized For 45 Years of Service To LVPA

The February meeting of the New Lebanon Town Board started off by remembering New Lebanon’s Assistant Fire Chief, Mark Sheline, who passed away on December 31.

A special resolution was passed, with all Board members in favor, recognizing Sheline for his years of public service, and his “selfless dedication to the people of the Town of New Lebanon.”

Settlement Of Route 7 Propane Truck Accident

On March 28, 2011, a tractor trailer truck carrying a load of propane, veered off State Route 7, crashed down an embankment, caught on fire and came to rest in Shingle Hollow Brook in the Town of Hoosick. The accident required the long term deployment of County personnel and required the diverting of traffic from Route 7 to CR-95. At the time the Rensselaer County Attorney commenced litigation against the owner and operator of the tractor trailer, Makria and Venezia Liquid Tank Line, Inc., in order to be reimbursed for the costs and damages suffered by the County. The defendants, Makria and Venezia Liquid Tank Line, Inc., have tendered a $60,000 offer to resolve this litigation.

Hoosick Falls School Board – No Clarity From Governor On State Aid

The Hoosick Falls School District released the first draft of its 2015-2016 budget. Total spending under this budget is $23,197,818. This is $710,733 more than this year’s budget, an increase of 3.2%.

Grafton Town Board Action – LED Lighting Project Nixed

At this month’s Grafton Town Board meeting on February 9, a resolution to install LED lighting improvements in the Town Senior Center and Post Office buildings for the purpose of reducing energy costs failed to win approval from the Board. Board member Rick Ungaro asked who pays the electric bill. The bills are currently paid by the tenants, and Ungaro said he doesn’t think the Town should spend money on the lighting improvements since it will not directly or immediately save the Town any money. HAYC3 Receives Generous Donation From Reynolds Foundation
