Stalemate On Grafton Budget

November 28, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Alex Brooks

The Grafton Town Board held a budget workshop on Thursday November 20, but it didn’t last long. Councilman Rick Ungaro presented a series of changes to the budget and made a motion, seconded by Councilman Mike Crandall, to adopt these changes to the budget . The vote was 2-2, so the motion did not pass. Town Supervisor Frank Higgins then made a motion, seconded by Councilwoman Barbara Messenger, to adopt the Preliminary Budget as the Final Budget. This also resulted in a 2-2 vote, so that motion did not pass either. But apparently it didn’t need to.

Holiday Craft And Gift Fair – Shop Small!

November 28, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Sherry Bowman-Kluck

This coming Saturday, November 29, marks the fourth year for celebrating Small Business Saturday. What exactly is Small Business Saturday? It is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. As with its counterparts, Black Friday and Cyber Monday featuring big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively, Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to patronize small and local businesses.

In accordance with this goal the Annual Holiday Craft and Gift Fair will be held at the Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center on Saturday, November 29, from 9 am to 1 pm. It is filled with locally crafted gifts for everyone on your holiday shopping list. Craftspeople and artists will be offering unique pieces for sale, including pottery, woodcraft, textiles, jewelry and one of a kind gifts. Wreaths and a variety of farm products and baked goods will also be available.

The Annual Holiday Craft and Gift Fair is a family and community event. Children are encouraged to visit Santa from 11 am to 1 pm. While they are telling St. Nicholas their heart’s desire for this Holiday Season and receiving a small gift, adults will have the opportunity to peruse the selection of affordable goods from our community’s finest small and local businesses. The whole family then can savor a delicious Charlie Dog lunch at a minimal cost from 11 am to 1 pm.

Shop small this Saturday and support our community and regional artists.

Caroling For Cans

November 28, 2014 By eastwickpress

Girl Scouts are sponsoring Caroling for Cans and special collections to help feed families this winter. More families than ever are turning to local food pantries in Berlin, Grafton and Stephentown for help.  The need for supplemental food has become so great that Berlin Elementary School (BES) is supplying food directly to families for weekends and during holiday periods. These organizations are having trouble keeping their shelves stocked.  Local Girl Scout Service Unit 154 is organizing a special holiday food drive to help food pantries and BES meet the need.

The community is invited to Caroling for Cans, a Christmas carol sing along on Wednesday, December 10, from 5:30 to 6 pm at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Berlin. You can help by attending this important holiday event and bringing a non-perishable donation for the food pantries/school.

The Girl Scouts will also ask community organizations to set out collections boxes for food and request their members to bring food donations to meetings held in December. Food collection locations will be announced very soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions or would like to help, please contact the Girl Scouts at 279-3772 or 733-6488.
