The Future Of Dougherty’s Corner – A Million Dollar Project

by Bea Peterson

If enthusiasm could get a project completed in a flash, then Jeff Buell’s concept for Parsons Corner, formerly known as Dougherty’s corner, would be finished tomorrow. However, enthusiasm alone won’t get it done. On Wednesday evening Buell, President and CEO of Sequence Development, brought his concept for the small lot at the corner of John and Main Streets to the Hoosick Falls Planning Board. The Petersburgh Town Board voted to accept Berlin’s offer and continue using the Berlin Transfer Station, pending approval of contract language for a new agreement between the towns. The monthly rental fee would be reduced from the current $1,000 per month to $700 per month, and the existing revenue-sharing arrangements would remain in place.

Hoosick Korean War Veterans Honored

September 19, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson

On Saturday, September 12, the community turned out to take part in a special “Welcome Home!” program for Hoosick veterans who served during the Korean Conflict. That war began in July 1950 and concluded in July 1953. Often called the “forgotten war,” it ended as a standoff, and today, as at the end of World War II, Korea is still divided between the North and the South.

Stephentown Town Board Action – Bella Bella

September 19, 2014 By eastwickpress

by David Flint

The Bella Terra Music Festival that drew crowds last month to Stephentown apparently did not cause as much consternation among local residents as in past years. No one showed up to complain at the Town Board meeting on Monday evening. Sue Demick did say that the noise got a bit loud at two in the morning on Sunday but on the whole she was pleased with the changes that the festival organizers made to tone things down. “My house didn’t shake,” she said, “It was much quieter – at least up until late Saturday night.”

Berlin Town Board Action – Short And Sweet

September 19, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Kieron Kramer

The September Berlin Town Board meeting on Thursday, September 11, was short and sweet. It lasted one root beer barrel and one hot cinnamon candy. Berlin Town Clerk Anne Maxon provides hard candy for the meetings, and this month she included root beer barrels – the penny candy from yesteryear. They are highly recommended.

The BCS Board Discusses The Berlin Elementary School Construction

September 19, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Thaddeus Flint

The September meeting of the Berlin School Board, Tuesday, September 16, was a swift one, with only continuing construction in the District and transportation to Tech Valley High School demanding any discussion.

To the delight of probably a few young students, the Berlin Elementary School did not open when it was supposed to open on September 4 due to continuing construction in the building. The District decided to extend summer a few more days in the interest of safety, and BES opened for business on September 8.

Grafton Planning Board Action – Cat And Mouse?

September 19, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Kieron Kramer

The agenda for the Grafton Planning Board meeting on Monday, September 15, had only one item of new business on it – the “application for site plan review for RJ Valente.” And so, it seemed, RJ Valente Gravel, Inc., was beginning the long awaited site application process in front of the Grafton Planning Board. Not so fast. No application was submitted at this meeting, and Jason Kappell, of Spec Consulting of Albany, the consultant for RJ Valente, said at the meeting that the decision to go ahead with the project, and therefore with the application process, had not yet been made.

Hoosick Falls Prescription Drug Return Day

September 19, 2014 By eastwickpress

Abuse of prescription drugs has skyrocketed among teens. The first place they often find them is in a medicine cabinet. Many teens believe using prescription or over-the-counter medicines to get high is safer and less risky than using street drugs. They can also obtain them for free.

HAYC3 is inviting the community to drop off any unused prescription drugs to the Hoosick Falls Police Department on September 27 from 10 am to 2 pm.
