Book And Bake Sale

The Library Book and Bake Sale is coming soon. August 23 is the day for one of our biggest fundraisers. We can accept baked goods on the morning of the sale, and we can accept books only when the Library is open. Sadly, when some people left books on the porch, they were damaged by rain. We are looking for donations of gently used books in good condition. We regret to have to say we cannot accept damaged, moldy or mildewed items nor can we accept textbooks, encyclopedias or technical books. These items will not sell and moldy items are a threat not only to our employees’ and volunteers’ health but also to our book collection. We no longer hold a boutique sale; we have returned to our tried-and-true Book and Bake Sale. Hope to see you there!

History Of Eagle Bridge At The Cheney Library

July 18, 2014 By eastwickpress

Ken Gottry will present a slide show of the history of Eagle Bridge at the Cheney Library, Hoosick Falls, on Monday, July 21, at 7 pm. Eagle Bridge, the junction of the north-south D&H and the east-west B&M railroad lines, was equal in prominence with Albany, Troy and Saratoga. There were multiple hotels and inns, an opera house, a creamery and many fine houses along tree-lined streets.

The show will include the history of the bridge, the church, the railroad, the houses and the people. Several lifelong residents including octogenarian Harry Moses will be on hand to add their stories to the photos.

The public is invited to attend and bring its own memories of the hamlet.

The slideshow is available online at http://www.gottry.com. In addition,  DVDs will be available at the Library.

Ken Gottry’s father was a local historian and his mother’s roots go back to the original settlers. In 2011, he published a pictorial history of Cambridge for its 250th anniversary.

Each year Ken entertains and educates the CCS fourth grade with stories and photos of the community. He is a frequent lecturer at area historical societies and social organizations.

Feel free to call the Cheney Library with any questions at 518-686-9401 or visit us at www.cheneylibrary.org.
