The Eastwick Press filed a Freedom of Information Request with the Town of Grafton to learn the substance of the settlement the Town insurer reached with Tyler Sawyer to resolve his $1 million suit against the Town, former Deputy Supervisor Cathy Goyer and former Town Bookkeeper Victoria Nellis. Sawyer claimed damage to his professional reputation from comments made publicly by the two Town officials.

Since there had been much fuss over Bill Shiland ordering salt before he was Highway Superintendent and without authorization, Supervisor Mark Surdam thought it best to discuss the issue in public, which he did at the Hoosick Town Board meeting on Monday, March 10. He noted that “the case is no longer going on” and the bill should be paid. All members of the Board agreed. However, Councilman Bruce Patire wanted to make a statement. The Grafton Town Board meeting this month was a bit of a circus, with more argument and drama than substantive action. The first controversy that erupted was over a letter to the Town Board from Sheryl Sawyer, former Town Supervisor Tyler Sawyer’s wife. Councilman Rick Ungaro read the letter out loud at the meeting. At the Hoosick Falls Village Board meeting on Tuesday, March 11, the Board agreed to purchase three hand carved 5×5 foot welcome signs to be placed at the entrances to the Village. The signs will cost $2,500 apiece and will have a Grandma Moses painting on them. An additional $2,500 had to be paid to the Moses Corporation to use the painting. Three Hoosick Falls Village Board members have chosen to serve on the Board for another two years. Robert Downing, Jeremy Driscoll and Ben Patten have been endorsed by both the Progressive and Taxpayers Parties and are, therefore, running unopposed.

The Hoosick Falls St. Patrick’s Parade and Irish Festival will celebrate its 23rd Anniversary on March 15. Twenty-three years ago local Irishman Mike Conway and TJ Carmody wanted to find a way to keep the Irish culture and history alive in the Hoosick area and decided that a parade was the ticket.

Hoosick Falls Police Chief Robert Ash said on Tuesday that 19 year old Brian Mayes of 90 Chuckleberry Way in Stephentown was arrested for Statutory Rape. Mayes formerly lived on Lyman Street in Hoosick Falls. He has been indicted by a Grand Jury and will soon appear in Court. The charge was made by a 15 year old girl. Chief Ash believes there are other young girls who may have had contact with Mayes. If there are, he hopes they will come forward. Their names will remain confidential.
