Free Estate Planning Workshop

An Estate Planning workshop will be held at the Stephentown Town Hall on Saturday, January 18, from 1 to 3 pm for forest landowners in the towns of Stephentown, Berlin, Canaan and New Lebanon.

Come get an overview of Estate Planning from an experienced attorney. This workshop will explore the human side of estate planning. It will focus on maintaining family ties to the land from generation to generation, building awareness of key issues facing family woodland owners and motivating families to address these challenges.

Refreshments will be served. Please call 429-8526 to reserve a seat. This project is funded by a grant from the USDA Forest Service.

Join us at the Everett Wagar Senior Center in Grafton on Thursday, February 6, at 6 pm as we learn how to borrow digital content from the library system. Jo-Ann Benedetti of the Upper Hudson Library System will lead us through the process of downloading books, audiobooks and video to various devices. Bring your device to the program to follow along.

The Hoosick Falls Soccer Club Is Looking For Soccer Players

The Hoosick Falls Soccer Club is looking for players for the Spring Travel League Season. We would like to field girls and boys teams from the under 10 divisions up to the under 14 divisions.

The registration deadline for players is fast approaching. Payment for registration will be accepted until February 15, after which there will be a late fee.

Darrow School Open House

Darrow School invites all prospective students and families to attend its upcoming Open House on Monday, January 20. The program begins at 9:30 am in the Wickersham Administration Building and will consist of class visits, tours and a question-and-answer period. Lunch will be provided.

Darrow’s challenging and individually focused college-preparatory curriculum features a unique combination of classroom instruction, hands-on learning and environmental consciousness. Our beautiful mountainside campus, a National Historic Landmark, is rich in its Shaker heritage and provides an ideal educational setting.

Any interested families with students who will be entering grades 9 through 12 in 2014 or 2015 are welcome to attend the Open House. Darrow has a rolling admissions policy and offers mid-year enrollment on a limited basis. Another Open House will be held on Monday, February 17.

Mountain Road School Open House

Parents and children in grades pre-k through eighth grade are invited to Mountain Road School on Tuesday, January 21, from 9:30 to 11:30 am for its monthly “Tea and Tour Tuesday.”  Prospective families (kids are welcome, too) can enjoy a cup of tea, learn about the school, tour the classrooms and campus and meet with teachers, current parents and students.

Since our Tea and Tour Tuesday open houses take place during school hours, families can get a genuine sense of what Mountain Road School is really like. “It’s a great opportunity,” said Director of Outreach, Anne Undeland, adding that the open houses will occur on the third Tuesday of every month until the summer break.

Founded in 1975, Mountain Road School is known for its innovative, multi-aged classrooms, visionary nature-based curriculum and nurturing child-centered philosophy.

Stephentown Fire Department Texas Hold’em

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department  will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, January 25, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

No advance registration is required. A donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every 10 players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of 9 places.

A free buffet will be served at the first break and refreshments will be available.

Panther Boys Gain Sole Possession Of League Lead

Friday evening’s game against the Hoosic Valley Indians was billed as a big game with two teams undefeated in league play and lead-in articles in all the major papers. Hoosic Valley was number three in the State rankings. One team was led by two high scorers and one team had scorers spread throughout the starting line-up. The game did not disappoint. Surprisingly, offense was not the highlight as defense stole the show in this game. The game ended with a 43 – 42 score, a season low for both teams.
