No doubt there is plenty of talent in the Hoosick area. And often there is nowhere to exhibit that talent. The Empowerment Exchange invites everyone to bring his or her best voice, instrument, comedy, poetry or skits to the Immaculate Conception Dining Hall, 67 Main St., Hoosick Falls, on April 5, from 6 to 9 pm.
Talent can’t shine without an audience, so bring friends and family along to enjoy a great night out and enjoy some laughs and good wholesome fun! There is no charge for this event, and there will also be free raffle prizes.
Second Annual Daughter’s Ball
The Second Annual Daughter’s Ball, a community dance, will take place on April 13 from 6 to 9 pm at the Berlin Elementary School. Admission is $5. There will be a DJ, snacks and pictures. The theme is “Glow.” Daughters, wear your best dress.

Spring Fun At The New Lebanon Library
The New Lebanon Library will celebrate Spring Break with the following delightful family events. Mark your calendar – you won’t want to miss out!
• Bingo for Kids – Monday, April 1, at 1:30 pm. There will be Bingo, prizes and fun for kids aged 5 to 12.
• Rhonda’s Reptiles – Tuesday, April 2, at 2 pm. Join Rhonda Leavitt and meet, touch and learn about snakes, tortoises, dragons, iguanas and even a baby alligator.
• Columbia Land Conservancy presents Beaver Tales – Thursday April 4, at 2 pm. This New York State mammal is an interesting critter with amazing adaptations. Learn how they’ve changed the look of Hand Hollow over the years. Create a wooden medallion with a beaver print to take home. Please call the Library to register in advance at 518-794-8844.

Texas Holdem’ Tournament Fundraiser At The Polish Hall
A Texas Holdem Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 30, at 5:30 pm at the Polish Hall in Hoosick Falls to benefit Kassidy Hitt, a senior at HFCS. Kassidy will be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, this summer in support of those who continue to struggle with cancer or who have fought their battle and won.
Kassidy will be climbing with Sean Swarner, “the CancerClimber.” Kassidy met Sean on a trip to NYC where he was a motivational speaker. She was so inspired by his incredible story that she wanted to get involved and support those with cancer by offering hope through inspiration. Sean’s motto and the title of his book is “Keep Climbing.” He explains that everyone struggles with obstacles in life, some much bigger than others…he states, “We all have our own mountains to climb”.
Sean, who was diagnosed with two separate and unrelated forms of cancer as a teenage, at one point, was given only 14 days to live. He astounded the medical community and survived. After defeating cancer twice, he realized that no challenge would ever be too great and no peak too high. So, with only one lung, he began climbing. He was the first cancer survivor to crest Mt. Everest. He has climbed all seven summits, completed the Ultimate Adventure Challenge and the Ford Ironman World Championship. He began the CancerClimber Association in 2001 to help people touched by cancer. The organization is focused on hope and giving people the tools needed to overcome cancer with the right attitude and to come out on the other side with a more positive outlook on life. Hope and inspiration are key to the association’s groundwork and foundation.
Sean’s goal for this trip is to inspire people to fundraise, not only for the trip, but to support his organization and the local people of Tanzania as well. He wants to make sure that Kassidy’s supporters understand the importance and legitimacy of her fundraising efforts. Sean states, “The deposit for the trip goes directly to support CancerClimber ($500) and to hold your spot. The rest of the $5,000 goes to support the local people in Tanzania who truly need the money… this trip supports a lot more than just people touched by cancer. The locals over there have no job, they have no income, and the funds we collect from everyone on the trip goes to help support their local economy, the local orphanage and even the local guides, porters, drivers, and people who need money more than we do, Also, we encourage and help people raise extra funds for CancerClimber. The money you raise also goes to give grants to cancer survivors, as well as funding and saving for a mobile camp for teens with cancer. Please know you’re making a difference in a LOT of peoples’ lives as well as developing a life-memory.”- Sean Swarner.

Texas Hold’em Tournament At The Armory
Shuffle Up and Deal! Join us at the Hoosick Falls Armory for the Texas Hold’em Tournament every first Friday of the month starting April 5.
The doors for the Tournament will open at 6 pm and play starts at 6:30 pm. The buy-in is $35 with an option for a $10 add on, plus a $5 high hand pot.

Veterans of Stephentown Texas Hold’em
The Veterans of Stephentown will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, April 13, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
A free buffet will be served at the first break.
No advance registration is required, and a donation of $35 per player will be accepted. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 1,000 extra chips. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of nine places.

Cambridge Balloon Festival Photo Contest
Calling all photographers! Do you have a great photograph taken at one of the previous Cambridge Valley Balloon Festivals? Does your photo highlight the beautiful Cambridge landscape or feature an interesting perspective of a balloon? Then we encourage you to submit it to the Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce Balloon Festival Photo Contest! CVCC is looking for eight photographs which will be printed as postcards that will be available as a set at the Balloon Festival this year and then sold in shops around Cambridge. We are looking for unique, beautiful images that show the natural beauty or unique architecture of Cambridge. Photos do not have to have hot air balloons in them, but the festival is certainly a theme we wish to highlight and will show preference for those images.
Professional and amateur photographers may enter. If chosen you will get photo credit whenever the image is used, however the rights of the photograph are given to CVCC. Hoosick Falls – Judith “Judy” Bulson of 56 Wilder Avenue, Hoosick Falls, NY, died Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT, following a long illness. Born in Hoosick Falls on July 24, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Alma (Loverre) Bulson. As a young girl she loved hanging out at her father’s business, Bulson Brothers Chevrolet, and she worked there for a while as a young adult.

Kenneth L. Smith
Berlin – Kenneth L. Smith, 44, formerly of Valley View Apartments, died on Saturday evening, March 23, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, NY, under the care of Community Hospice of Rensselaer County.
Born August 20, 1968, in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late Russell Smith and Nancy Cassel Carr and the step-son of Charlie Carr of Petersburgh, NY. A life-long resident of the area, Ken was educated in Berlin schools. He served for 8 years in the United States Army Reserves. For most of his adult life, he was a self-employed carpenter. Ken was an avid NASCAR fan whose favorite driver was Matt Kenseth.
Survivors, besides his mother and step-father, include his wife, Lisa A. Corbin Smith, whom he married on August 29, 1999, in Petersburgh, a sister, Christine and husband Terry Sprague of Grafton, NY, and three nieces, C’Anna, Darien and Abigail.
Visitation and services are private with burial to take place at the Berlin Baptist Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berlin Rescue Squad. Arrangements are under the guidance of the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home of Petersburgh.
