Cynthia Brown, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), has announced that Shauna Alderman of Petersburgh was placed on the Dean’s List for the fall 2012 semester.
This completes Alderman’s Bachelor of Arts degree at MCLA.
To be eligible for the dean’s honor list, matriculated students must be enrolled in six or more credit courses, attain a grade point average of 3.25 or better and have no incomplete grades. A total of 591 MCLA students were named to the dean’s list this past fall.
Gabriel Montgomery Named To UAlbany Dean’s List
Gabriel Montgomery of Petersburgh was named to the University at Albany’s fall 2012 Dean’s List for outstanding academic achievement.
The University at Albany-SUNY is an internationally recognized research university with 50 undergraduate majors and 125 graduate degree programs.
Lip Sync Contest And Kids’ Dance
The North Hoosick Fire Department is sponsoring a lip sync contest at its regular kids’ dance on Friday, March 1, at the Fire Station. The contest will begin at 7 pm and continue through 8 pm. Students participating in the contest are advised to arrive early. Prizes will be based on attendance.
The dance will continue to 10 pm. All students ages 9 to 15 who attend Hoosick Falls Central, Berlin Central, Cambridge Central or St. Mary’s Academy are invited for this night of fun.
Veterans of Stephentown Texas Hold’em
The Veterans of Stephentown will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, March 2, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
A free buffet will be served at the first break.
No advance registration is required, and a donation of $35 per player will be accepted. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 1,000 extra chips. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of nine places.

Women’s Journaling Circle At The HAYC3 Armory
Explore yourself through writing. Examine your issues in a freshly rational light, not rehearsing, regurgitating and repeating but shifting perspective. We’ll share if we like in a no-pressure atmosphere. We’ll also discuss writing tips and work on writing exercises. Whatever your genre, be it poetry, memoir or fiction, journaling can be its backbone. We aim to discover what out writing tells about our inmost selves.
This experience will be run by Megan Randall (P.S. MFA in Creative Writing). This six week class will start on March 6 at 6 pm. The cost for HAYC3 members is $30, $75 for non-members. Please contact HAYC3 for more information at 686-9050.

Ruth Marie Riley
Hoosick Falls – Ruth Marie Riley, 81, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2013, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. She was the wife of the late John Riley, who died in 2006.
Born on May 20, 1931, in Hoosick Falls, NY, Ruth was the daughter of the late Paul and Catherine (Fennessey) Lavin. She was educated at schools in Troy, NY, and Hoosick Falls. Ruth had been employed at Stanley Tools in Shaftsbury, VT. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Ruth liked cooking, baking and knitting, and she also loved her home in Groveside.
Survivors include her daughters, Kathy Riley of Bennington, VT, Trish Bossong and husband Jim of North Bennington, VT, her sons, Jack Riley and wife Laurie of South Lima, NY, and Tom Riley and wife Kristee of Groveside, NY. Ruth is also survived by her sister, Margaret Cottrell, her grandchildren, Meghann Rose, Patrick Riley, Nancy Mock, Melissa and Adam Frechette, John Riley, Jenna Green, Jamie and Meredith Lampman and Brendon, Brody, McKendrick and Abriel Bossong, her ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ruth is pre-deceased by a sister, Vi Carelli, and brothers, John and Robert Ellis, Paul, George, Ned and Bill Lavin.
A Mass of Christian Burial is being offered on Friday, March 1, at 10 am from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial will follow the Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hoosick Falls.
Relatives and friends may call at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Activity Center at the Danforth Adult Home or the Hoosick Falls Senior Citizen Center through the funeral home.
Catherine Relihan
Eagle Bridge – Catherine Relihan, 99, of Eagle Bridge, NY, died on February 22, 2013, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT, after a brief illness.
Born on October 31, 1913, she was the youngest child of Sarah McAllen Relihan and Edward Relihan. She is pre-deceased by her parents, her brothers, Tom and Neil and his wife Margaret, her sisters, Agnes Relihan and Sara Relihan Meagher and husband Jack, and her niece, Margaret (Marie) Relihan.
