Summer Field School in Historical Archaeology

August 4, 2022 By Eastwick Press

Submitted by CCSD
This year, students attending Cambridge Central School (CCS) Summer Field School in Historical Archaeology spent time investigating a local site in White Creek known as the Van Corlaer Trading Post. Students participating in the program learned skills in archaeological field work, which included surveying, map making, excavation techniques, artifact identification, and historic preservation. The Trading Post is believed to have been built by Arendt Van Corlaer, a Dutch fur trader between 1709 and 1711 for a local Native American Sachem known as Soquon, “The Owl King.”

I am honored that I was chosen to help lead such an outstanding district and school community. I have heard nothing but positive things about the students, athletes, families, and the surrounding community. Everyone that I have had the pleasure of speaking with has already made me feel like I am part of the New Lebanon Family.

I come to you with 10 years of experience as an educator and leader in rural, urban and suburban settings ranging from the elementary, middle and high school levels. I grew up in Upstate New York before leaving to attend college out of state. I couldn’t be happier to return to New York and make this my home once again. It Was a Great Day for a Parade

July 16, 2022 By Eastwick Press

The weather could not have been better on Monday for the annual 4th of July festivities, and in particular the parade through the Village. The theme of this year’s parade was Iconic American Brands, featuring slogans and mascots that have created both our and the world’s image of us.

The honor of Parade Grand Marshal was bestowed this year on Berlin Town Clerk Anne Maxon who has served the Town and its residents in that post since 1982. She was Deputy Town Clerk for six years prior to that.

As usual, many prizes were handed out, with the judging taking place just prior to the parade’s step off. Here is the list of winners: [Read more…] about It Was a Great Day for a Parade

ARPA Funding Requests

July 16, 2022 By Eastwick Press

by Chris Tergliafera
At the Monday, June 20 regular meeting of the Petersburgh Town Council three different groups gave presentations to the Council requesting American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The first proposal, which was prepared by the Friends of Petersburgh History and submitted by Town Historian Peter Schaaphok, requested funds for the purpose of preserving the original Town record books, if possible, and making a replica and digital copy of the books for public viewing. Items needed include a laptop, scanner and external hard drive. The requested items total $7,660.37 but an anonymous resident has offered to donate $3,000 towards the cause. Making the Classic Street Sidewalk Problem Go Away

July 16, 2022 By Eastwick Press

by Doug La Rocque
Take a walk on Classic Street by Bistro 42 (not their problem) and on the sidewalk there is a mess and considered by many to be dangerous. All year long the Hoosick Falls Board of Trustees has been discussing what to do about it and at their June meeting asked Village Attorney Andy Gilchrist to look into taking the land by eminent domain. The Catch-22 here is that Village Codes talk about unsafe structures being covered by such action, but not necessarily sidewalks. To make sidewalks part of a legal eminent domain proceeding would mean the Trustees would have to change a 2008 local law. Attorney Gilchrist presented the Board with a new law to consider, and introduction of which will most likely occur at a special meeting on July 19. Mr. Gilchrist also explained they need to decide if they just want to take the land around the sidewalk or the entire site, and what would they do with the site after the sidewalk is repaired. All points to ponder. [Read more…] about Making the Classic Street Sidewalk Problem Go Away
