Ruth S. Barber – Obituary

Cherry Plain – Ruth Shirley Barber, 95, a longtime resident of Cherry Plain, NY, gained her wings and was reunited with her loving husband, “Tommy,” when she peacefully passed away on July 11, 2022.

Born in Pittsfield, MA, on December 12, 1926, to the late Lester and Harriett (Main) Sime, Ruth was raised on the family farm in Lanesboro, MA, where, as a young girl, she attended a one-room schoolhouse. She later was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She held fond memories and often spoke of her love of learning and school.  

Other than her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Thomas G. Barber, who died in June 2010, her siblings, Lillian, Robert, Elizabeth and Caleb, a favorite aunt, her husband’s Great-Aunt, Priscilla and a beloved grandson, Joseph Nippes.   [Read more…] about Ruth S. SVHC Celebrates $24M in Capital Campaign Support

Southwestern Vermont Health Care’s (SVHC) Foundation Board President Bob Van Degna has announced that $24 million has been quietly raised over the last four years toward the goal of $25 million for the Vision 2020, a Decade of Transformation Capital Campaign. The multi-phased project will renovate and expand the Emergency Department and front entrance to the hospital, and construct a new Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center on the health system’s main campus.

County Receives DEC Funding

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recently announced $255,240 for two projects to improve water quality, increase flood resiliency, and conserve natural resources in Ulster and Rensselaer counties. Funding for these projects is provided by the State’s Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) and is administered by DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program in partnership with NEIWPCC. Thomas K. Rose, Jr. – Obituary

Petersburgh – Thomas Kenneth Rose, Jr. (Ken), 92, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022. Ken was born on May 14, 1930, in Albany, NY to Violet Ingraham Rose and Thomas Rose, Sr. Ken was a jokester who treasured his family and always gave to those in need. From 1951 to 1953, Ken served as a paratrooper in the 11th 503rd Airborne Division of the United States Army. For 32 years, he worked for the Arsenal in Watervliet, NY, ending his career as a locomotive specialty mechanic. He was a DAV life member, a Star Lodge 670 member, and a member of the Masons. Ronald L. Jacobs – Obituary

Grafton – Ronald L. “Jake” Jacobs of Blueberry Ridge Road died on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany after a short illness. Born in Hagerstown, MD, Jake was the son of the late Clayton and Juanita Davis Jacobs and husband of Robin Jones Jacobs. Jake grew up and was educated in Hagerstown then entered the Navy in 1965, serving until 1982. He was honorably discharged with a rank of E8 AMCS. In 1986 Jake and Robin moved back to New York where Jake worked in the Construction and carpentry trade with his late brother-in-law, Stewart’s, and Vanderheyden School. Jake was a NASCAR fan of Denny Hamlin and enjoyed camp, baseball, and gardening in his flower and vegetable gardens. Jake was a man with many projects and everybody’s handyman. Alvin W. Hunt – Obituary

Hoosick Falls – Alvin (Al) Wallace Hunt, 80, a resident of Hill Road in Hoosick Falls, passed away July 13, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. Al was born in Hoosick on November 28, 1941, the son of the late Frederick and Edith Hunt. He attended Hoosick, NY schools, graduating from Hoosick Falls High School class of 1960. Alvin worked as a driver for Peoples Gas & Oil and as a boiler technician for many years at Oak-Mitsui. Upon retirement he worked for Fairdale Farms and drove a bus for Southern Vermont College. David F. Shuhart – Obituary

Berlin – David F. “Pa” Shuhart, 75 died Monday, July 18, 2022 at Southwest Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. He was born in Hoosick Falls on May 5, 1947, the son of the late Clifton G. “Sonny” Shuhart, Jr. and Jennie F. Wysocki Shuhart. He was raised and educated in Berlin. He was a logger with his father and later worked at Berlin Lumber Company. He was employed for over 32 years by Saint Gobain of Hoosick Falls as a tape machine operator, before retiring in 2012. He was also the owner of Pa’s Country Car Wash on Route 22 in Berlin.  

He was a caretaker for many houses in the Berlin area and also snowplowed for many people.  

He enjoyed camping and NASCAR. In his early years he enjoyed fishing with his grandfather in the Adirondacks. He loved shiny red fire trucks and owned two of them. He also enjoyed driving his convertible.   [Read more…] about David F. Shuhart – Obituary

It Was a Great Day for a Parade

The weather could not have been better on Monday for the annual 4th of July festivities, and in particular the parade through the Village. The theme of this year’s parade was Iconic American Brands, featuring slogans and mascots that have created both our and the world’s image of us.

The honor of Parade Grand Marshal was bestowed this year on Berlin Town Clerk Anne Maxon who has served the Town and its residents in that post since 1982. She was Deputy Town Clerk for six years prior to that.

ARPA Funding Requests

At the Monday, June 20 regular meeting of the Petersburgh Town Council three different groups gave presentations to the Council requesting American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The first proposal, which was prepared by the Friends of Petersburgh History and submitted by Town Historian Peter Schaaphok, requested funds for the purpose of preserving the original Town record books, if possible, and making a replica and digital copy of the books for public viewing. Items needed include a laptop, scanner and external hard drive. The requested items total $7,660.37 but an anonymous resident has offered to donate $3,000 towards the cause.
