Grafton – Mildred Reichard King, 95, formerly of Reichard Farm Road in Poestenkill, passed away peacefully on Friday February 13, 2015. Born in Troy, Millie was the daughter of the late Clayton and Esther Reichard. Millie was married in 1940 to the late Henry “Hi” King in the Poestenkill Church of Christ and she was a longtime employee of the New York State Compensation Board. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and baking.

Hoosick Falls – William H. Klaer Sr., 81, passed away on Wednesday February 11, at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls. He was the husband of the late Shirley Klaer who died in 2012.
John (Bub) Haynes
Hoosick Falls – John (Bub) Haynes, 86, of Jacksonville Florida passed away on January 26, 2015, after a courageous battle against lung cancer. Mr. Haynes was born in Hoosick Falls, NY, February 29, 1928 to parents Irving and Elizabeth Fitzgerald Haynes. He went to LaSalle Institute, and graduated from Hoosick Falls Central School, and the University of Florida, Gainsville. He served in the US Navy during WW11.
After his discharge he met his wife, Evelyn while working in Sarasota, FL. In 1966, Mr. Haynes and his family moved to Jacksonville, where he helped found Florida Junior College. He served as first Vice President, then as a psychology professor at South Campus until his retirement in 1993. He was an avid golfer, a passionate Gator fan, constant joker and beloved family man.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Evelyn Freeman Haynes, sons Timothy and Stephen, grandchildren Christopher, Logan, Jeffrey, and Kevin, brothers Robert and wife Noreen and Paul and wife Mary and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two brothers Joseph and William. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery on February 20, 2015.

Black River Pond Dam Poses Risk

Could the Dam at Cherry Plain State Park pose a risk to the proposed high pressure gas pipeline that might one day run through Stephentown? Some residents believe yes. And whether or not the pipeline ever gets built, residents living along the Black River would still like to know what might happen should a hundred year storm – one like Hurricanes Irene or Sandy—fill the pond there to the breaking point.
Hoosick Town Board Action – Salt Shortage

At the Hoosick Town Board meeting on Monday, February 9, Highway Superintendent Bill Shiland said “right now we have no salt stockpile. The last salt went down last night (Sunday).” Shiland said there is a shortage of salt everywhere. “There are more orders than they can fill,” he added. He noted suppliers will take care of the State and the County first, “but we’re the little fish,” implying the Town’s request for salt will be way down the list. Shiland said his crew had been mixing the salt with sand to stretch it out.

Petersburgh Town Board Action – Highway Department Critic Sounds Off

The Petersburgh Town Board meeting began with a lengthy complaint from Dayfoot Road resident Mike Dundas about what he saw as the shortcomings of Highway Superintendent Rob Cottrell and the job he is doing of clearing the roads. Dundas’ complaint was wide-ranging, from complaints about the clearing of his own road to practices of the Highway Department that he observed and thought to be inefficient. Said to have been the most well attended meeting ever held in Stephentown, the Fireman’s Hall was filled with 180 folks Thursday night (February 5), many of whom voiced their distress and anger at the proposed Kinder-Morgan/Tennessee-Gas high-pressure fracked gas pipeline slated to pass through their properties and their towns. Fitzsimmons Takes On Cystic Fibrosis With Relish
Dragon slayers come in all shapes and sizes. Grandma Linda Fitzsimmons is working to slay the Cystic Fibrosis dragon with relish. Really… with relish. Her grandson, 10 year old Mathew, was born with Cystic Fibrosis. Mathew attends St. Mary’s Academy. He plays basketball and was a member of the Youth Football team that won the Superbowl last fall.
