Two Candidates For Hoosick Highway Superintendent

The only two local candidates running in the election next Tuesday are Bill Shiland III and Louis Schmigel. They are vying for the remaining one year of the term of Town of Hoosick Highway Superintendent. The vacancy came about with the unexpected retirement of former Highway Superintendent Bill Shiland, Jr. in August. Shiland held the job for 25 years. Petersburgh Budget Heading Towards A 5% Tax Levy Increase

Although the Petersburgh budget for 2013 has not been finalized, the Board has held two budget workshops and appears to be heading toward a budget that would increase the tax levy by about 5%.  The budget as it stood at the end of the second budget workshop was slightly below a 5% increase. DEC Lists Notice Of Stephentown ZBA Acceptance Of Motocross Environmental Statement

The State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced on its Environmental Notice Bulletin website that the Stephentown Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA), as lead agency, has accepted a Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the Stephentown Motocross Track proposed for a site off of Webster Hill Road. This action occurred at the ZBA meeting on October 4.

Local Scout Participates In The Regional Emergency Medical Organization Drill

On Saturday, October 27, at the Albany County International Airport Michael Zlotnick from Troop 222 volunteered as a victim of an airplane crash. He was one of about 98 other victim volunteers made up of other Scouts, college and high school students and community members. The Regional Emergency Medical Organization Drill (REMO) is one that is required every three years by the FAA and is a good opportunity to evaluate the area’s response to a MCI (Mass Casualty Incident).

NLCSD Wins State Award

The New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) has chosen the New Lebanon Central School District as one of three winners in its inaugural Be the Change for Kids Innovation Awards.
Out of 38 schools from 36 districts, New Lebanon, along with the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District and the Rondout Valley Central School District, was chosen by the NYSSBA and the University at Albany’s College of NanoScale Science & Engineering to receive $5,000 toward the continuation of its program. The programs were judged by scientists from NanoCollege.

Joyce Brewer Honored By HACA

At the annual HACA Volunteer Appreciation Harvest Brunch on October 20 at the First United Presbyterian Church Joyce Brewer was honored as the Volunteer of the Year. Joyce is a Girl Scout Leader, HACA volunteer and organizer of the recent very successful “Fill the Bus” drive for the Food Closet.
Other Awards
The HACA Community Award was presented to the Hoosick Falls Lions Club.

Anna LaFlure

Hoosick Falls – Anna Philips Slocum LaFlure, 94, died peacefully on October 28, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Wauseon, OH, after a brief illness. She was a popular resident at the Fulton Suites in Wauseon, where she had resided since 2007. Prior to her move north she resided in Largo, FL.
Ann was born on October 22, 1918, at home in Easton, NY, the second of three girls born to Alex and Lillian Surdam Slocum. After graduating from the Walter A. Wood High School in Hoosick Falls, NY, she attended Green Mountain College, Class of ’39, in Poultney, VT, and studied business. Ann married William (Bill) R. LaFlure at her parents’ home in Hoosick Falls on April 19, 1941, and they remained happily married for 47 years until his death in 1989.

Hoosick Falls Police Key Topic In Village Dissolution Hearing

The hot topic at the second public hearing on the Village of Hoosick Falls Dissolution Study, held at the Senior Center on Thursday, October 18, was the Police Department. At the opening of the meeting Paul Bishop from the Center for Governmental Research, the company performing the study, reviewed the three options before the Village. He reminded everyone that the options affect only 28 percent of their tax bill, the Village portion. The remainder is controlled by the State, the County, the Town, the Fire Districts and, a very small portion, by the Cheney Library.
