Hoosick Falls – Patricia Lohnes, 70, formerly of Hoosick Falls, NY, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2012, at her home in Canon City, CO, after a long, courageous battle with pancreatic and lung cancer.
Born in the “old” Hoosick Falls Health Center on Hall Street on February 27, 1942, she was the daughter of Ralph and Ida (Domonic) Davendonis. She spent her childhood and early life in Hoosick Falls, graduating from St. Mary’s Academy in 1959. Pat worked at the “old” Grand Union which was on the site of the present day Rite Aid. Many will remember her as an avid bowler for many years as one of the Sharkettes team.

First Open Meeting On The Future Of The Village Of Hoosick Falls

At least 60 people attended the first in a series of meetings regarding the future of Hoosick Falls. Mayor Matt Monahan opened the meeting stating there are misconceptions floating around about this process. He was emphatic that no decisions have been made at this point. He said, “Times are hard, taxes are up, there are not a lot of businesses in the Village and New York is a rough state taxwise.” He added that in the Village the economy is in tough shape and the Village has an aging population. He noted there are over 100 homes for sale in the Hoosick area and many have been for sale for more than a year. Many other homes are in foreclosure. County Legislature Requests DOT To Review Safety Conditions Of Route 2 Overpass In Petersburgh

On Tuesday, October 9, the Rensselaer County Legislature passed a resolution requesting the State Department of Transportation review safety and travel conditions on State Route 22 in Petersburgh in the area where State Route 2 is carried via bridge over State Route 22. The resolution was introduced by District 5 Legislators Stan Brownell and Lester Goodermote, who represent the towns of Stephentown, Berlin, Petersburgh, Grafton, Hoosick and the Village of Hoosick Falls, and was joined by the entire Legislative body. After the meeting a broadcast journalist from TV Channel 6 and his cameraman showed up to interview Brownell and Goodermote in the anteroom of the Legislative Chamber about the traffic problem in Petersburgh.

A Stephentown Firefighter Suffers Smoke Inhalation At Powder Hounds Fire

Seven fire companies responded to a fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon at the Powder Hounds Restaurant situated at the base of Jiminy Peak. Hancock, MA, Fire Chief David Rash said that the fire of unknown origin started about 2 pm. By 4 pm the fire was under control, but firefighters were still in the process of dousing hot spots. Rash expected they would continue to do so into the night hours.

Hoosick Town Board Action – Town Pool Cost Is An Issue

The Town of Hoosick Board meeting was held on Tuesday, October 9, instead of Monday in deference to the Columbus Day holiday.
Mid-meeting Councilman Bruce Patire asked residents for their patience and understanding as the Board deals with the upcoming budget. “Businesses are asked for more from less people,” he said. “It is difficult for us. There are only so many things we can do in the next year or two.” He said they want to hold taxes down, but there are decisions to be made to save the Town Pool and to fix roads. “We’re looking at a health insurance increase of ten percent, minimum,” he said. “We have to make hard decisions.”

New Lebanon Ethics Board Will Stay Put

What happens in New Lebanon stays in New Lebanon – at least for the moment. A vote at Tuesday’s Board meeting on the enactment of proposed Local Law #1, which would have sent allegations of ethical impropriety to the Columbia County Ethics Board and dissolved the local ethics board, failed to pass.
“The matter is effectively dead,” said Town Clerk Colleen Teal. Although it could be brought back at a later time, she noted. Village of Hoosick Falls Board Action – Niel Stowell Commended For 25 Years Of Service

The first order of business for Mayor Matt Monahan at the Hoosick Falls Village Board meeting on Tuesday, October 9, was to recognize Highway Superintendent Niel Stowell for 25 years of service to the Village.
Deputy Mayor Paul Haynes reported that the fiscal year end shows the Village didn’t have to use any of the fund balance set aside for the year. The Water Department had a $37,000 surplus and the Wastewater Department had a $35,000 surplus.

St. Mary’s Academy Cow Plop And Car Show

It was cool and overcast Sunday, October 7, for the Annual St. Mary’s Academy Cow Plop and Car Show at the Town of Hoosick Athletic Fields. Youngsters were oblivious to the weather as they enjoyed hay rides, bouncy bounce, pumpkin painting, games and laser tag from morning to afternoon. There was plenty of food for everyone, plus raffles, a silent auction, politicians and, of course, the main event – the Cow Plop.

San Damiano Food Pantry Keeps On Giving

The food pantry run by San Damiano Family Support Services continues to be busy, serving about 50 families a month from its building near the top of Potter Hill in Petersburgh, NY. This food pantry has been in continuous operation since 1984. The pantry gets most of its food from the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY in Latham.
The food pantry invites people who can’t afford to buy food to call them on Monday or Tuesday from 10 am to 2 pm to request food assistance. The phone number is 658-3530.
