Rensselaer County Legislature – Hoosick Area Athletes Recognized
Sierra Bailey In The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade

The first four resolutions passed at the Rensselaer County Legislature’s regular meeting on Tuesday, December 13, recognized the achievements of student-athletes from Hoosick Falls. Two teams were honored, the Hoosick Falls Central School Girls Soccer team and the HFCS Football team, and two individuals were honored.
The first resolution of the night told the story of Sierra Bailey, a senior cheerleader at HFCS. According to the resolution, Sierra has been cheerleading since the age of five. At seventeen she tried out for a spot on the Varsity Cheer Squad over the summer at a cheerleading camp and at the age of seventeen her dream came true. Although she tried out with no expectations of making the team, when the results came back she was one of five hundred accepted to take part in the synchronized cheerleading squad during the 85th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, November 24, 2011.

Berlin – Norma Shaw, 88, a lifelong resident of Berlin, NY, died on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, VT, after an extended illness.

Alyce Florence O’Neill
Hoosick Falls – Alyce Florence O’Neill, 62, a resident of Easy Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, and formerly of Waterbury, CT, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2011, at her home surrounded by her family.
Born in Waterbury on October 9, 1949, Alyce was the daughter of William and Alyce (Bergamo) O’Neill. She attended Crosby High School in Waterbury and earned her GED at the age of thirty-five and was very proud of that achievement. After attending Mattatuck Community College she worked for twenty years as a senior accounting clerk for Osram-Sylvania at their Watertown plant.

Hoosick Falls – Richard H. Bump Sr., 84, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, VT, where he had resided since 2008. Formerly Richard had resided on Congress Street in Hoosick Falls, NY. He was the husband of the late Anita (Albergine) Bump, who died in 2000.

Alice Hayden 2011 NYS Soccer Player Of The Year; Tom Husser Coach Of The Year

Hoosick Falls Central School soccer standout Alice Hayden, a junior, was recently selected 2011 New York State Class C Co-Player of the Year. Tom Husser was selected 2011 New York State Class C Co-Coach of the Year. These are first time honors for the school. Additional honors were heaped on the team as Alice Hayden, Maritza Gonzalez, Meg McKee and Grace Delurey were selected All-State 2011 Players. Hayden was also selected Section II Player of the Year. “To have four girls selected from one team for All State Players is unprecedented,” said Husser. “It shows the kind of team we had.” Hayden, Gonzalez, McKee and Delurey were also elected Section II All-Stars. The Panthers won the State Class C Championship this year.

Troops Receive A Taste Of Home From Hoosick Falls

On Saturday, December 3, Suzanne and Gary Fitzpatrick, assisted by family and friends, mailed 24 boxes, weighing 991 pounds and costing hundreds of dollars, to service men and women in eight different locations. The 735 containers of cookies and candies will be received by five units in Afghanistan and one each in Japan, Qatar and Honduras.

New Lebanon Justice Race Decided By One Vote

The New Lebanon election for Town Justice has finally been decided. According to the Democratic Commissioner of the Columbia County Board of Elections, Virginia Martin, Republican Jack Nevers has won the race with 368 votes to 367 votes for the incumbent Darcy Poppey who ran on the Democratic, Conservative and Independence lines.

Hearing On BCS Capital Plan Draws Few

A week before residents will be voting on whether to spend $6.8 million to fix up two school buildings in the Berlin Central School District, it was surprising that so few turned out on December 5 for a public hearing on the project. Only a handful showed up earlier in the evening to hear Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Young speak at the last of four town meetings, this one at the high school in Cherry Plain. Young scheduled the meetings to introduce himself, to talk about his views on 21st century learning and to present information about the proposed construction bond.
