Lead Danger Dominates Berlin School Board Meeting

The report on lead testing at Berlin Elementary School, arranged by Questar III BOCES and conducted last May and June, was finally posted on the Berlin Central School District’s website (berlincentral.org) earlier this month. The results have produced a fire storm of anger and confusion that was reflected at the School Board meeting attended by over 100 people on Tuesday evening, October 19.

Berlin Board Votes At Special Meeting To Make Offer On Berlin Lumber Property

Stormy Meeting Ends In Consensus

At a Special Meeting on Wednesday, October 20, the Berlin Town Board voted 4-1 to make an offer on the Berlin Lumber property on Route 22 in Center Berlin. The offer voted on was very different from the one that the Board refused to ratify at the Town Board meeting on the Thursday before. The new offer contains contingencies for voiding the sale agreement which answer a number of the concerns expressed by the people who attended the meeting Wednesday. Hoosick Falls House Gutted By Fire

Tom Vassello was in the process of selling his late parent’s home. “The house had been empty about a month,” he said. “We had a buyer and they were preparing to move in.” Unfortunately a suspected electrical fire created a change of plans. “Thank God no one was in there and no one was hurt,” said Vassello on Wednesday as he looked over the ruins. Petersburgh Town Board Action – Planning Board Attacked

The Petersburgh Planning Board came under attack from several citizens during the public comment period of the Town Board meeting.
Planning Board Chairman David Miller, who was attending the meeting to speak to the Town Board about a proposed moratorium on subdivisions, left the meeting just before the statements critical of him and the Planning Board began, so he did not hear any of the complaints.

HAYC3 Received $625,000 Grant

The Hoosick Area Youth Center and Community Coalition (HAYC3) recently received a Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) grant for $625,000. Grafton Town Board Action – Concern Over Rescue Squad Suspension

An issue that brought several people to the Grafton Town Board meeting on October 14 was a letter to the editor that appeared in the Eastwick Press regarding a certified letter sent to a member of the Grafton Rescue Squad suspending her from the Squad. Stephentown Town Board Action – Tentative Budget Has Close To 11% Tax Levy Increase In Spite Of Cuts

A tentative Town budget for Stephentown presented at a public hearing Monday evening would reduce expenditures by about 2% but still result in a tax levy increase of close to 11%. Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt said the Town has been dipping into “savings” for too long, using the unexpended fund balance to keep taxes down. Gundrums Honored At Grafton Senior Center

Joan and Gordon (Gunny) Gundrum owned the old house and land on the corner of Route 2 and Roxborough Road for many years. In ceremonies Monday, October 18, when the couple was presented with a plaque in appreciation of their donation of the property to Grafton for use as the Everett Wager Senior Center, Gundrum recalled some of the history of the old building. Firefighters Visit St. Mary’s Academy

As Part of Fire Prevention Week local Firefighters visited  St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls on Friday October 8. The firefighters spoke to the children about fire safety, smoke detectors, family escape plans, how to stop, drop and roll, the importance of knowing their home addresses and how and who to call in an emergency.
