Daughter Angeline Gets a Job

Monday, April 16, 1838: Today I walked over to Claudius Moffitt store and there I met with James Harrington and bargained with him to come tomorrow and make me chestnut shingles at one dollar per thousand. At Moffitt’s store I paid six cts for myself and James Harrington and brother Samuel Beers each a drink of rum. I then went to one of the trustees of that school district by the name of Finch to see if they wanted my second daughter Angeline to teach school. Sunday April 1, 1838: Today I took my one-horse wagon and carried cousin Beriah Wylie to the Shakers meeting and tonight we gathered two barrels of sap and tonight about eight o’clock Birtus Cowen came and wanted to stay tonight. He said I had told him he might stay but don’t run away from Danford. Jury Duty

Sunday, March 18, 1838: Today nearly noon I started for Troy. I was summoned to Circuit Court as a juror and I walked on foot. On the way I called in Nassau to cousin Chauncy Row and took tea. Selling The Cheese

Tuesday, February 12, 1838: Today we returned from the widow Potter’s at Waterford to Lansingburgh. There we traded, and then we came down to Troy. There on the sidewalk we met with two boys that said they had found two rings in the street. I paid them 44 cts for the rings. The rings had diamonds. Saturday, January 6, 1837: This morning I had my son Geo P ride to Lebanon to N. Nichols Store and get one pint 1/2 gin and a vial of paregoric and had it charged. I got for Lucinda Clemmons to take and the gin for a syrup for her. Today I moved my cheese from my south chamber, the stove pipe was too warm, it melted them and made them crack standing up on edge.  I put them in oats flat down three deep in my north chamber. Wednesday, December 20, 1837: today about eleven o’clock I started for market. I carried two sacks of apples and about six cwt of late-made cheese.  I got about forty dollars for that cheese. I went through Troy. I could not sell my cheese there but I sold one bag of apples for eighty one cts and then I went on to Lansingburgh to Lamb’s Tavern.
