NYS Assemblyman McLaughlin Announces Mobile Office Hours In Rensselaer County
Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin (R,C,I-Melrose) today announced that he will be holding mobile office hours throughout Rensselaer County during February and March. McLaughlin said traveling around the District will provide constituents with more opportunities to meet with him personally to discuss local and State issues. With the onset of State budget negotiations, McLaughlin also said this would give constituents an opportunity to address and ask questions about issues that are important to them.
“As the people’s voice in state government, the best way I can represent our District’s needs is by hearing directly from the families, seniors and business owners who live in the District,” said McLaughlin. “This is a great way to open up conversations about the local issues my office might be able to assist community members with as well as an opportunity to help shape our legislative agenda in Albany.
“I am encouraging everyone to stop by my Mobile Office Hours to share thoughts, concerns and ideas with me and my staff.”

Friends of Cherry Plain State Park Outdoor Fun Day
On Saturday, February 23, the Friends of Cherry Plain State Park (FCP), is hosting Winterlude, a free day of fun in the outdoors. The event will be based at the Cherry Plain State Park entrance on Miller Road from 10 am to 3 pm.
Volunteers will host snowshoe hikes, cross-country ski treks and ice skating on the pond. An animal tracking and nature observation event will be featured. Members of the FCP will be on hand throughout the day to direct and guide small parties ready to head out into the various areas of the DEC’s Capital District Wildlife Management Area. Free snowshoe demos will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Kids’ craft activities will be available inside the Park office when they need to warm up.
There will be a bonfire, hot chocolate, hot dogs and marshmallows for roasting. Participants are invited to bring their own potluck dish to share on this community-spirited day. You will meet some wonderful people and have a chance to explore this picturesque park during a quieter time of year. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly and bring along their outdoor equipment for a day of adventuring.
FCP thanks the Town of Berlin for plowing a loop near the Park entrance to provide parking. However, as parking will be in short supply; everyone is encouraged to car-pool when possible.
For further information or offers to help at the event, please call Dick Gibbs at 283-0155 or 225-7371. Come on out and make your own fun as you join in with other outdoor enthusiasts.

Letter To The Editor – A Feudal Firearms Law?
To the Editor:
It is with a heavy heart and utter disappointment and disgust that I find myself compelled to write this letter, the causation of which is the enactment of New York’s recent ill-conceived feudal firearms law. This law is an overbearing assault on individual Rights guaranteed by our Constitution! A knee jerk reaction to a heinous crime perpetrated by an insane individual, this does nothing to address the root of the problem, which is the state of mental health in this country, and the treatment (or lack thereof) of those so afflicted. In their haste to trample the Constitution of the United States under the pretense of public safety there was absolutely no thought put into this law, or the ramifications thereof.
While I am certain the 21 gun salute at the close of the Berlin Memorial Day Ceremony will be almost as dignified and respectful with BB guns as it was with the Garand rifles typically used which are now classified as “assault rifles” and illegal, I am not as confident our respected veterans who once carried these same rifles across Europe and the Pacific in defense of liberty and our Constitutional Rights will feel quite as proud or dignified marching down the streets of Berlin in our Independence Day Parade, a celebration of Rights and Freedoms, with broom sticks on their shoulders instead of their Garand rifles!
I must also point out that while we lack the funds to repair roads and bridges, we miraculously have funding to crush honest citizen’s Rights? Or is this destined to be yet another unfunded State mandate to be foisted upon the Counties?
While I maintain this travesty must be repealed immediately, I must applaud our State Senator Kathy Marchione for having the courage and wherewithal to stand up to the Governor and downstaters so eager to seize our Rights! And being in receipt of our copy of the Eastwick Press yesterday, dated January 25, which reported on the Petersburgh Town Board actions, I must also tip my hat to Petersburgh Town Councilman Duane Goodermote for his similar efforts to defend the Constitution.
There is yet another question that arises and that is this: If they can move so swiftly and without public debate to eliminate our Second Amendment Rights, which portion of the Constitution will they trample next? Our Right to voice our disgust with their actions, or perhaps the Right of the Eastwick Press to even be published?
