As I have talked with folks about this Saturday’s American Legion Auxiliary’s fund-raiser I have heard some perplexing questions. I do not profess to having all the answers, but I do know why I am attending. I want to do what I can to honor our veterans. My first husband was a Vietnam combat veteran. Sean Gallivan’s Green Renewable company took over the old W.J. Cowee plant in Berlin two months ago and already signs of a rebirth are evident. For one thing, production of Burn-Rite firewood, the business run by the former Hoosick River Hardwoods company, has been increased by about 50%. Taconic Valley Soccer Club Spring Travel Team Registration
The Taconic Valley Soccer Club has reopened its rosters for the upcoming Spring travel teams. If you want to play during the Spring season there is still time to register until January 20. The following teams are still looking for a few players: U12 girls, U14 girls, U16 boys and U17 girls.

A Program On The Erie Canal
The Poestenkill Historical Society will start the new year with a program on the Erie Canal by guest speaker Marvin Bubie. Bubie’s second book is an accumulation of seals from places along the Erie Canal. He will be showing the seals and telling interesting and funny stories related to them. The majority of seals are pictured in color in his book, available at the program.

Town Of Berlin Organizational Meeting

The Berlin Town Board met on January 3, 2012, at 7 pm for the Organizational Meeting. Board Members present were Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger, Councilmen Dean Maxon and John Winn and Councilwoman Tara Cinney. Also present was Richard deLeon Jr. who was appointed Tuesday to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Councilman James Saunders in September.

Eric Weber Promoted To Colonel
Eric Weber, formerly of Berlin and a 1979 graduate of the Berlin Central School District, has been promoted to Colonel in the New York Army National Guard. Weber, who currently serves as the acting director of the New York National Guard’s Strategic Plans directorate, has served in the military since July 1979 when he enlisted in the New York Army National Guard as an electronics repair technician. He will be deploying to Afghanistan in 2012 as part of a New York Army National Guard team of senior officers acting as advisors to the Afghan National Army.

The Little Hoosic Watershed Association is pleased to announce that its website, after several months development, is finally live. The site includes information about the Association and the Little Hoosic River. Books Donated In Memory Of Els Murray

The Stephanie Flint Book Club has donated four books to the Berlin Library in memory of their friend and member, Els Murray, who died this past summer.
