Brandon DeShane, who graduated in June from high school in the Berlin Central School District and who attended the Rensselaer Vocational Center and studied Construction Technology competed in the SkillsUSA Regional Carpentry Competition at the Schenectady Airbase in February 2011. Brandon won 1st place in the Regional Carpentry Competition whereby he was sent to the States Competition in Syracuse.

Boy Scout Troop 222 met at the Berlin Free Town Library to help with the upcoming Book, Bake and Boutique Fund-Raiser. The young men, who will enter grades 6-9 at Berlin Central this fall, braved bee stings and the Library dungeon to haul hundreds of books for the annual fund-raiser. Sandra Owens Earns Degree From The College Of Saint Rose
Sandra Owens, a resident of Berlin, was among 1,749 students who received undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates of advanced study from The College of Saint Rose in Albany. Owens received a Certificate of Advanced Study as a member of the Class of 2011.

Berlin – Marcia E. Jones, 96, of Dyken Pond Road, Berlin, NY, died on Friday, July 22, 2011, at the home of her son after a short illness. A lifelong resident of Berlin, Marcia was the daughter of the late Milan and Lillian Loker Goodermote and wife of the late Robert E. Jones. Marcia had been a resident of Dyken Pond Road since 1964. She was a homemaker and a member of the Berlin Methodist Church.

Berlin Town Board Gets Comprehensive Plan

After almost five years of work and input by Berliners, including survey information, the Berlin Comprehensive Plan is now in the hands of the Berlin Town Board, ready to be acted upon. Thanks to the expertise and professionalism of Rensselaer County Economic Development Planner Linda von der Heide during the last stages of development and presentation, the Plan was completed in July in time for the Board’s regular meeting on July 14. Growing A Farmers’ Market
Since early June, something has been growing in Berlin. Something town resident Trish Gerstel said, “Has the potential to bring many positive changes to the valley.”
Earlier this year Gerstel formed Our Valley Community Farmers’ Market (OVCFM), which she now participates in as vendor and Market Manager. Berlin Republican Wood Raffle Winner
After the Fourth of July Parade in Berlin, the Berlin Republican Committee drew the winner of their Raffle of a truckload of log length firewood. The winner was Rebecca Bowen of Berlin. She does not burn firewood but has given the load to her brother.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in the raffle and especially Jim Winn who donated the wood and Bob Anders who provided the trucking.
