An ATV accident on the Taconic Ridge Friday evening, August 20, brought out multiple agencies to the rescue. According to Berlin Fire Chief William Osterhout, the accident occurred close to the Massachusetts border two or three miles up in the woods beyond the Mattison Hollow trail head in Cherry Plain that leads up to the Taconic Ridge State Forest.

Berlin Passes Windmill Moratorium

During its regular meeting on Thursday, August 12, the Berlin Town Board voted unanimously to pass Local Law #1 of 2010, also known as the Wind Energy Conversion System Construction Moratorium. This law prohibits the construction of wind energy conversion systems, commonly referred to as windmills or wind turbines, between the heights of 35 and 300 feet for one year. Georges Seurat And Erik Satie Featured In Berlin Library Finale

On Wednesday, August 11, the Berlin Free Town Library presented its Summer Reading Program Finale, “Go With The Flow.” This summer’s theme was “Make A Splash at Your Library.”
Over the last six weeks, 65 area children ages 3 to 18, parents and community volunteers took part in an art, theater and music production that brought to life Georges Seurat’s famous pointillist painting “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.”

Hike At Cherry Plain
On Saturday, August 28, at 10 am, the Rensselaer Land Trust will lead a walk along a new trail at the Capital District Wildlife Management Area in Cherry Plain. Participants will stroll down an old road less than a mile to picnic at an old dam and mill site. Those interested in a longer hike can cross the brook and hike a few miles back through a forest and bog.

As promised at the July meeting, Town Board Member Richard von Schilgen dropped a water bombshell at the Berlin Town Board’s regular meeting last Thursday, August 12. The bombshell was in the form of a lengthy letter about the deficiencies of Water District #2, which supplies water to the village of Berlin, from Pa’s Country Car Wash on Route 22 in the north, down South Main Street to the intersection of Route 22 and South Main, branching up Plank Road one house past Morse Heating and up Green Hollow Road to Whitney Rathbun’s, through Echo Park, Brookside Park and to Berlin Elementary in the south of the village. Bentley Project On Little Hoosic River Completed
Board members of the Little Hoosic Watershed Association held a meeting last week to view the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s recently completed work near a stream crossing in Berlin, where the changing course of the river resulted in severe erosion and loss of farmland.
