The Berlin Limner

Matthew McKeeby, The Berlin Limner, will be the guest speaker at the April 19 meeting of the Taconic Valley Historical Society. A limner is simply an artist or painter. The term has come to be used specifically in reference to painters in the North American Colonies who worked during the 18th and 19th centuries. Limners once traveled the countryside providing any and all painting services.

Penny Whistles In Poestenkill

The Poestenkill Historical Society will meet Tuesday, April 27, at 7:30 pm in the Poestenkill Town Hall on Rt. 351. The Society will host Marilee Urbanczyk who will be playing Dutch Folk music and will present a program on Penny/Tin Whistles. The term penny whistle was coined on the streets of Dublin in the late 1500s because of the whistles prevalence among the beggars and vagabonds in Ireland.
Refreshments will be provided after the program. The public is welcome, free of charge, to this program. For directions, call Patricia at 283-5223.

Berlin ZBA To Decide On Cherry Plain Cell Tower

On April 15 the Berlin Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) will decide whether Mariner Tower can construct a cellular tower on Doug and Melinda Goodermote’s property in Cherry Plain. The construction site is located on the west side of Rt. 22, and, as is evident from February’s public hearing, a considerable number of local residents support the tower. It will reach approximately 150 feet high and be fenced off from the community. Those who favor the tower claim it will be an asset to the area.

The Circus Is Coming To Berlin

The Kelly Miller Circus will be in Berlin for one day only on Wednesday, July 7, with two performances. The Big Top will be located at the Mill Street Field in Berlin. Everyone is invited to the tent raising, free of charge, on circus morning. Berlin Rescue Squad Café

On April 9 the Berlin Rescue Squad will be holding a Cold Sub night. From 5 to 7 pm these dedicated volunteers will be serving this delicious dinner to the public. Prices will vary slightly per sub depending on type. We will also have soda, water and chips available for purchase. Please come and make this a successful fund raiser for us.

Meeting On Rensselaer Plateau Legacy Area Is Packed

DEC officials are convinced that designating the Rensselaer Plateau as a Forest Legacy Area would make good environmental and economic sense. Representatives from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) presented their proposal Before a packed audience of about 150 people at Tamarac School last Wednesday, March 24. Grafton Senior Center Gets 50 Inch TV On Hat Day

Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center held a ribbon cutting event on Hat Day, March 31. The seniors at the Center have been trying to get a television for the last few years. That dream was fulfilled recently with a 50″ flat screen television, thanks to the generosity of many people.

AARP Defensive Driving Course

The Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Road, Grafton, will be holding an AARP Safe Driving Course, Wednesday, April 28, and Thursday, April 29, from 10 am to 2 pm with a break at noon for lunch. Maple Weekend In Berlin

Joining 150 other sugar houses across the state, Kent’s Sugar House on the Plank Road in Berlin celebrated the 15th Annual New York Maple Weekend on March 20-21 and the celebration continues this weekend, March 27-28. Maple Weekend is a project of the New York State Maple Producers Association. It’s an open house weekend, hours from 10 am to 4 pm, and an opportunity to see how maple syrup and other maple products are made from the tapping of the trees to the boiling of the sap into syrup and the making of maple cream, butter, sugar and candy.
