Timber Cutting Workshop

May 23, 2014 By eastwickpress

Making the decision to harvest timber on your property can be challenging. It’s a decision that will impact your woods and how your family will use it for many years. It’s often difficult to know where to start or who to talk to. If you’ve been thinking about a timber cut but would like more information before moving forward, then sign up for a workshop presented by a Master Forest Owner (MFO) on Saturday, May 31, at 9:30 am at the Pineridge Cross Country Ski Area on Plank Road (Co Rt. 40) in East Poestenkill.

MFO Walter Kersch will introduce landowners to proven management practices for their forests, will help landowners understand the role of a forester and what to do when approached by a logger or timber salesman.

During this hands-on event you will visit a forest plot marked for a timber stand improvement (TSI) cut, learn how to measure trees to estimate the board feet or cords of wood and consider tree conditions for pulp or saw timber. Participants will discuss advantages and expected results of a TSI and gain a better understanding of how to figure out potential returns and when a tree is of most value. The group will also share experiences of management efforts in their own woods.

The program is presented by the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance and co-sponsored by the Capital District New York Forest Owner Association with a $10 per person fee to cover costs. Refreshments will be served. Please wear clothing and boots suitable for walking in the woods and don’t forget your insect repellent!

To register for the workshop please visit http://tinyurl.com/jwc8ayg. To learn more about the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance visit http://rensselaerplateau.org.

by Kieron Kramer

When Dog Control Officer Doug Goodermote gave his report at the Berlin Town Board meeting on Thursday, May 8, he said that “a few dogs went missing but everything has been quiet, exceptionally quiet.” If Goodermote has so little to say you can guess that the whole, 30 minute meeting was exceptionally quiet. Berlin Summer Feeding Program

May 9, 2014 By eastwickpress

This summer the Berlin Community Food Closet will once again offer free breakfast and lunch items to families whose school-aged children receive free/low-cost meals during the school year. The 2014 Summer Feeding Program will operate for 10 weeks, from June 20 to August 22, supplying these children with healthy food items such as low fat milk, low sugar cereal, whole grain bread and fresh fruits and vegetables.

In anticipation of once again feeding between 25 and 30 children, the funding goal for this year’s program is $3,500. Individuals and families have several options for helping meet that goal: 1) A one time contribution of any amount; 2) A one time contribution of $200 which will cover the cost of feeding one child throughout the summer, or 3) $20 donations made each week for the program’s 10 weeks.

Food donations are another way to assist the Program, and those who are able can give in one of two ways: 1) Commit to purchasing food items for one or more child(ren) throughout the 10 weeks of the program, or 2) Make a one time donation of non-perishable food items that will be distributed, namely peanut butter, cereal and/or tuna fish.

Information about the Summer Feeding Program is available for download from the “Berlin Community Food Closet” page on the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church’s website (http://www.berlinsdb.org/ministries) or by contacting Trish Gerstel at trishagerstel@berlinsdb.org or 518-658-3769.
