Karen Lehmuth Huff

Berlin – Karen Lehmuth Huff, 62, passed away on January 24, 2014, at her home in Brookside Park in Berlin, NY. She was the daughter of Margaret and the late Harold Lehmuth of Stephentown, NY.

Karen worked for W.C. Cowee, Inc. in Berlin and Seagroatt’s Roses in Berlin until it closed and then she worked at Seagroatt’s in Colonie, NY.

Besides her mother, Margaret, Karen leaves three sisters, Margaret Mosher, Nancy Stollsteimer and Janet Van Rijsewijk, and two brothers, Walter and William Lehmuth.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berlin Ambulance Squad.

Berlin Free Town Library News

The Berlin Free Town Library will hold two programs this Saturday, February 8.  There will be a Make-and-Take Workshop in the children’s area from 10 to 11 am.  Participants will learn how to make Swedish hearts, simple origami hearts, origami bookmarks and Valentine snowflakes.  Please drop in to learn a new craft.

Also on that day, the Library will provide free tax preparation help from 10 am to 1 pm.  Call the Library for details at 658-2231.

Shaylah Morris Named To Dean’s List At SUNY Canton

Shaylah Morris a SUNY Canton Nursing major from Berlin made Dean’s List for the fall 2013 semester. Morris is a 2011 graduate of Berlin Central High School.

Dean’s List requires full time students to achieve a grade point average of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.

Winter School Break Specials For Kids At Area State Parks

Monday, February 17 – Backyard Bird Count at Grafton Lakes State Park at 10 am – Be-A-Bird, Bird Bingo and Bird Watching Fun! Pre-register please. The cost is $2 each or $5 for the family.

Wednesday, February 19 – Animal Tracking with the family at 1 pm at Grafton Lakes State Park. Who has been out in the Park overnight – fox, weasel, squirrel or deer? You’ll see signs of many furry neighbors. Pre-registration is required – space and snowshoes are limited. The cost is $2 each or $5 for the family.

Saturday, February 22 – Cherry Plain State Park Outdoor Day from 11 am to 3 pm – snowshoe outings and fun in the Park for all ages, sponsored by Friends of Cherry Plain State Park. Call 279-1155 for more information.

Snowshoe Outings In February

Saturday, February 8, Wednesday, February 12, and Thursday, February 27 – Snowshoe Outing at 10:30 am starting from the GLSP Office. Try out snowshoeing and see what wonders winter has to share on the Park’s trails. Pre-registration is required as space is limited; call 279-1155. The cost is $2 per person.

Llewellyn Palmer In National Snowshoe Championships

Llewellyn Palmer, of Berlin, is heading for the 2014 U.S. Snowshoe Association national championships after an impressive finish in a qualifying race in January. Palmer, a Paul Smith’s College student majoring in parks, recreation and facilities management, locked up the spot at the national event after qualifying at the Empire State Snowshoe Racing Association Championships, held in Fabius, NY, on January 26.

Despite the extremely cold conditions the past few weeks, Palmer has been training and racing in the United States and Canada to prepare for some major races, including the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival snowshoe races at Dewey Mountain on Wednesday, February 5, the International Snowshoe Championships in Granby, Quebec, on Saturday, February 8, and the Empire State Winter Games snowshoe races at the Paul Smith’s College VIC on Sunday, February 9.

Palmer will compete at the 2014 U.S. Snowshoe Association National Championships from Friday, February 28, through Sunday, March 2, in Woodford, VT.

Berliner Dies After Car Accident

Young people in the Eastwick area have lost yet another of their friends in a tragic traffic accident. Bad weather and treacherous road conditions took the life of Berlin resident Natasha Shuhart, 27, following a collision on Route 22 in North Stephentown last Saturday afternoon, January 25.

Berlin School Board Invites Community To Participate In Meeting On Use Of School Facilities

The Berlin Board of Education is interested in pursuing use of its various school facilities by community residents.  The Middle School/High School has state of the art rooms, including a fitness center, a distance learning laboratory, a computer lab, an information center  (library), a gymnasium and an auditorium as well as numerous classrooms for meetings and general instruction.

As the BOE plans for the 2014-2015 school budget, it wants to hear from residents and invites them to participate in a roundtable discussion on Thursday, February 6, beginning at 7:15 pm.  The Berlin Central School District will be holding this informational meeting in the MS/HS Library. Ideas generated by community members will be used to determine interests and possible future continuing education program offerings.

Any person interesting in providing suggestions for community use of schools should attend and join this open discussion or contact the Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Young at syoung@berlincentral.org.

The Berlin Central School District 2014-2015 Kindergarten Registration

The Berlin Central School District has begun the process of registering kindergarten students for the 2014-2015 school year.  If you have a child who will be five years of age on or before December 1, 2014, please call 658-2127 from February 3 through February 14 or from February 24 through February 28 between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm to make sure your child is listed on our kindergarten register.

This will ensure that you will receive the kindergarten registration packet by mail.  All registration paperwork, including a copy of your child’s Birth or Baptismal Certificate and proof of residency, must be hand-delivered to Berlin Elementary School by March 28.  Drop-off times are between 8:30 am and 3:45 pm, Monday through Friday.

The office will be closed from February 17 through February 21 for Winter Recess.
