Building Wild – A New National TV Series With Heavy Local Input

It is amazing how one thing can lead to another and another and life takes an incredible turn. That is what happened this summer when television producer and Hoosick native George Verschoor introduced Paul DiMeo, nine year feature designer of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to Hoosick Sand and Gravel’s Pat Bakaitis. Verschoor produced “Extreme Makeover” for two years.

TVHS Students Start Clinical Rounds In Troy

Local Students Named To Fall 2013 President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College

A number of local students were recently named to the President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy for the Fall 2013 academic term.

Each fall and spring term, the College’s President’s List honors those students who have a term grade point average between 3.5 and 4.0. Local students include:

Clarice Derosia of Berlin – Derosia is in the Liberal Arts and Science: Humanities and Social Science academic program at the College.

Judith Galusha of Berlin – Galusha is in the Early Childhood academic program at the College.

Berlin Rescue Squad Café

On Friday January 17, the Berlin Rescue Squad will be holding its monthly delicious Fish Fry Dinner. For $10 you can enjoy a hearty helping of fried cod on a roll, French fries, coleslaw, brownie and soda or water. Eat in or take out, it’s up to you.

We have also decided to serve mini hot dogs as well. These can be purchased in a meal, $10 for ten dogs with fries, a brownie and a beverage or $5 for four dogs with fries, a brownie and a beverage) or purchased a la carte.

Call-in orders are welcome. The Firehouse number is 658-2890. The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 pm at the Berlin Fire Department. Please call Stan at 658-0088 or 269-8646 with any questions.

Berlin FD Monthly Breakfast

On Sunday, January 5, from 7 to 11 am, the Berlin Fire Department will be holding its monthly breakfast. Breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, French toast, biscuits with homemade sausage gravy, bacon and sausage, home fries, toast and eggs (sunny side, over easy, over hard or scrambled), beverage choice of coffee or tea (both available as decaf), hot chocolate, milk and orange juice.

Prices are $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-12 and no charge for children under 5. Takeouts are available.

Elaine W. Goodermote

East Poestenkill – Elaine W. Goodermote, 65, of Plank Road, Averill Park, NY, died on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the home of her sister after a long illness. Born in Troy, NY, Elaine was the daughter of the late Carl and Charlotte O’Dell Johnson and wife of the late Bertram P. Goodermote. Elaine was raised in Berlin, NY, and was a 1967 graduate of the Berlin High School. Elaine had resided in Berlin until 1989 when she married Bert and moved to Poestenkill, NY. Elaine retired in 2000 after 26 years as a bus driver with the Berlin School District. She was a Past Board Member of the Berlin Alumni Association and a past member of the Berlin Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Elaine enjoyed bowling, cake decorating, crafting, babysitting numerous children of Berlin and spoiling her nieces and nephews. Elaine’s family wishes to give a special thanks to Sharon Brock and Amanda Gavin for the endless hours of care they gave Elaine, helping to make her comfortable.

Survivors include her brothers, Leonard and wife Patsy Johnson of Berlin, William and wife Shirley Johnson of Corpus Christie, TX, and Carl and wife Tina Johnson Jr. of Troy, her sister, Lynda (Carol Axtell) Johnson of East Schodack, NY, her aunt, Jean and husband Pete Baretski of Dannemora, NY, her nieces and nephews, Beverly Weatherwax, Matthew Johnson, Amanda Hidalgo, Charlotte and Michael Johnson, and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Memorial Service was held on Friday, December 27, at 7 pm at the West Stephentown Baptist Church, 1672 NY 43, West Stephentown, NY.

Relatives and Friends were invited and also called at the Church on Friday from 4 to 7 pm prior to the service.

The family suggests that donations in memory of Elaine W. Goodermote may be made to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY, 12204, or the Community Hospice of Rensselaer Co., 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY, 12144.

Girl Scout Caroling

Girl Scout Service Unit 154 will be marching down Main Street in Berlin on Wednesday, December 18th singing Festive Holiday Carols. We will be leaving the Seventh Day Baptist Church at 5:45pm and marching to the Berlin Library. We invite the community to sit out on their porches and enjoy in the festive singing or join us in our march down Main Street.
