Berlin Rescue Squad Café

On Friday, December 20, the Berlin Rescue Squad will be holding its monthly delicious Fish Fry Dinner. For $10 you can come enjoy a hearty helping of fried cod on a roll, French fries, coleslaw, brownie and soda or water. Eat in or take out, its up to you. We have also decided to serve mini-hot dogs as well. These can be purchased in a meal – $10 for 10 dogs with fries, brownie and beverage, $5 for 4 dogs with fries, brownie and beverage or purchased a la carte. Caroling In Berlin

On Thursday, December 19, at 6 pm all are welcome to meet at the Berlin United Methodist Church to Christmas Carol up the street and around the village. Join in the sharing the Christmas spirit with voice and song. This is the kickoff event of the United Mehodist’s weekend of special services and events to celebrate Advent. The Church is at 17 South Main Street, Berlin.

The DOT’s Response To Route 7 And Route 22 Problems

In late October County Legislators Stan Brownell and Lester Goodermote, who represent the towns of Stephentown, Berlin, Petersburgh, Grafton, Hoosick and the Village of Hoosick Falls, received letters from the New York State Department of Transportation in response to their concerns forwarded to the DOT in the form of resolutions by the County Legislature. The two concerns the Legislators put forward were the number of truck accidents that have occurred on the portion of NY Route 7 between the Bennington Battlefield Motel and the intersection of Route 7 and Route 22 in the Town of Hoosick and the hazardous condition of the road surface of Route 22 in south Berlin running through Stephentown to the Columbia County border.

Berlin Library Story Time

Story Time at the Berlin Free Town Library will take place at the Library on all four Saturdays in December starting at 10:30 am. The Library welcomes children from preschool age and up for Story Time on December 7,14, 21 and 28.  For questions, please call the Library at 658-2231.

Berlin Town Board Action, Pt. 2 – Berlin Youth2Youth Hopes To Add New Lebanon Youths

Due to space considerations the remainder of last week’s report on the Berlin Town Board meeting is continued this week.

The Berlin Town Board meeting on Thursday, November 14, began with a presentation by two young ladies from the Berlin Central School District, Julianna D’Alessio and Drew Kells, who are members of the Berlin Youth2Youth organization, the youth center of TRACs (Together Reducing Alcohol & Drugs in our CommunitieS). Kells and D’Alessio presented a persuasive argument for why it is time for Berlin Youth2Youth to be joined by teens, and sponsors, from the New Lebanon community. Caroling And Holiday Music And The Berlin Christmas Tree Lighting

Come to the annual Christmas Tree Lighting with Santa sponsored by the Berlin Fire Auxiliary at the Berlin Firehouse parking lot on December 1 at 4:30 pm. This festive event is free and open to the public.

Refreshments will be served in the Firehouse after the tree lighting ceremony.  Please bring a non-perishable food item for the food pantry, if you can. We hope you and your family can join us to kick off this Joyous Holiday Season.

Berlin FD Breakfast With Santa

On Sunday, December 1, from 7 to 11 am, the Berlin Fire Department will be holding its monthly breakfast. Breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, french toast, biscuits with homemade sausage gravy, bacon and sausage, home fries, toast and eggs (sunnyside, over easy or over hard, scrambled), beverage choice of coffee or tea (both available as decaf), hot chocolate, milk and orange juice.

Prices are $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-12. Children under 5 eat free. Takeouts are available.

Santa will be making a special appearance during the breakfast from 8 to 11.

The Ladies Auxiliary will be tempting you with their homemade baked goods.

Please join us for breakfast, a visit with Santa and then take home some treats for later in the day.

The End To End Challenge

The End to End, a 29 mile endurance challenge along the Taconic Crest Trail, will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014, as announced by the Taconic Hiking Club. This event pits entrants against 29 miles of unimproved backwoods trails traversing three states – New York, Vermont and Massachusetts.  The challenge of this hike is a cumulative total of 7,836 feet of ascent and 9,470 feet of descent to be completed in one day.

In past years, entrants have come from New Jersey, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York to test their stamina against the rigors of a trail that includes Berlin Mountain, the highest point in Rensselaer County.

Those interested in achieving the end reward of a specialized trail patch and a unique certificate of achievement should contact R.J. Hydorn, 2 Miller Avenue, Troy, NY, 12180, or rjhydorn@lycos.com to have the registration form sent. The form is also online at http://taconichikingclub.blogspot.com.  Completed registration forms will not be accepted until December 1, 2013.   An entry fee of $30 is required with each registration. This fee is non-refundable after March 31, 2014. There will be a ceiling of 25 entrants for this event, with each application handled on a first received, first served basis. Additional entrants will be placed on a waiting list in case of cancellations.

All participants in this challenge are expected to arrive in Pittsfield State Park on Friday, May 16, to camp out and be ready for the 5 am wake up and hot breakfast served by the Taconic Hiking Club.  Hikers start at 5:30 am, and there are three support sites with water and other supplies along the route.  Sweep parties follow the hikers to provide assistance and support as needed.  Volunteers will be available to pack the hikers’ camping gear and move their cars to the finish line at Rt. 346 in Pownal, VT.  Entrants are encouraged to bring a companion to help with this and to be available to drive a very weary hiker home after the successful completion of this event.

It should be noted that this is not a timed event and entrants only compete against their own clocks, not each other.  This unique event has been held for over 30 years and has attracted attention in both Backpacker and Adventure magazines.
