Movie Event Is A Hit In Berlin
by Sherry Bowman Kluck
On Friday, October 25, more than 60 people gathered at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Berlin for a viewing of “Home Run,” the story of fictional baseball star – and alcoholic – Cory Brand, whose abusive childhood set him on the road toward personal destruction. Attendees of the movie event were treated to popcorn, soda, cookies and other snacks, all provided free of charge through the Church’s teen outreach, The Landing. Based on the Christian treatment program Celebrate Recovery, which is featured in “Home Run,” The Landing helps teens overcome their hurts, habits and hang-ups and recently celebrated its one year anniversary at the Seventh Day Baptist Church. Although “Home Run” deals with very serious topics, the October 25 event was a positive experience for all, as they learned more about the hope that is offered to our local youth through The Landing program.

Taconic Valley Historical Society Meeting
“Women of the Revolution – Backstage Heroines” will be the topic of the October meeting of the Taconic Valley Historical Society. The speaker for the evening, Phyllis Chapman, brings history and notable Americans to life through living history personifications of some of the most fascinating and influential people. In period correct costume, and speaking in the first person, she introduces you to people you could never meet anywhere (or any-when!) else. The American Revolution was a war – a civil war in many ways – in which the female half of the American populace participated in many forms, willingly and unwillingly. Conventional history has been remiss in not adequately noting the support and exploits of women as battles raged in their towns and foreign invaders threatened their homes and way of life. Listen to their stories, participate in activities and examine artifacts and come away from the presentation with a richer understanding of our history.
The meeting will be on Monday, October 21, at 7:30 pm at the United Methodist Church on South Main Street, Berlin. It is open to the public and free of charge. Refreshments will be served.
