Cherry Plain, NY – In loving memory, Allen Wayne “Hooter” Alderman, age 58, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2013, at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. He was born on September 1, 1954, in Troy, NY, to Rodney Alderman and Joanne Mooney Simmons.
Allen grew up in Berlin, NY. He graduated from Berlin High School in 1972. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army in Troy. He served in the Army for nine years with the 82nd Airborne Division on the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
Allen was a member of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington, VT. He loved deer hunting, fishing, watching western movies, playing baseball/softball and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid New York Yankees and New York Jets fan.
Allen was preceded in death by his father, Rodney Alderman, and his first wife, Audrey Kimball Alderman.
Allen is survived by his mother, Joanne Mooney Simmons, his stepmother, Judith Perham, his fiancé, Florence Church, his former wife, Ann Smith, his brothers, David, Scott and Eric Alderman and Tom Baldwin, Jr., his sisters Theresa Stevens, Tammy Perham, Michelle Brown, Kimberly Stuckman and Tammy Carollo, his sons, Corey and Randy Alderman and Casey Kimball, his daughter, Christina Alderman, six grandchildren, Samantha, Alex, Eva, Audrey, Charlie and Carly, his loving nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives and many friends.
A memorial service with full military honors was held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY, on July 16 at 1 pm by the United States Army and cemetery volunteers.
A local memorial service will be held at the Berlin Baptist Cemetery in Center Berlin, NY, on July 20 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Baylor College of Medicine Office of Development, 1 Baylor Plaza MS: BCM160, Houston, TX, 77030. Arrangements are under the guidance of the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home of Petersburgh, NY.

In May members of Our Lady of the Snow parish, formerly St. John Francis Regis Church in Grafton and Sacred Heart Church in Berlin, had a lavish buffet dinner for Fr. Four Arrested In Alcohol Sting In The Eastwick Area

State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Initiative in the Eastwick area on Saturday, July 6 and several local businesses were caught in the sting. As part of the investigation, Police recruited an undercover underage volunteer to enter each of five establishments where beer or liquor is sold. The Hull Family At The Taconic Valley Historical Society
The topic of the July 15 meeting of the Taconic Valley Historical Society will be the Hull Family. Roger Hull, his father and son will visit Berlin from July 13 to 16 researching their rich family history in the Berlin area. Their research includes the Satterlee, Hull, Bentley, Peckham, Whitford, Burdick, Johnson, Sanders, Coon, Moon and Greene families.
The Hulls will give a presentation on the information they have and what they learned during their visit. If you have connections with the Hull family, we encourage you to bring photos or memorabilia to share. The meeting will be held at the Methodist Church, South Main Street, Berlin at 7:30 pm. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Summer Events At The Berlin Library
Summer Reading activities have begun at the Berlin Library. Visit the Library to sign up for Summer Reading and please join us for the following activities:
• Friday, July 12, from 1 to 2 pm – “The Whirlwind” (from Bre’r Rabbit Tales) for ages 7 and up. Led by storyteller Deborah Green, participants will make instruments to join in an interactive storytelling project.
Tuesday, July 16, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm – Bedtime Stories (for ages preschool to 7). Led by Amy Montgomery, participants will listen to stories and have a visit from the tooth fairy.
• Thursday, July 18, 6:30 to 7:30 pm – Colored Flowers, led by Simon Carr. Participants will create flower drawings using color – open to ages 9 to adult.
• Tuesday, July 23, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Bedtime Stories (for ages preschool to 7). Led by Lisa Flynn, participants will hear The Tale of Peter Rabbit and plant vegetables in Mr. McGregor’s garden.
• Thursday, July 25, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Jody Scalise presents “The Motion Man,” a performance using mime and movement for all ages.
• Tuesday, July 30, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. “We Dig Bedtime” stories and songs for ages pre-school to 7 led by Martha von Schilgen.
• Wednesday, July 31, from 1 to 2 pm – “From An Acorn Grows An Oak” (for ages 8 and up). Led by Charlotte Neaton, participants will make a craft using acorns.
• Thursday, August 1, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Led by Lisa Flynn, for ages 7 and up, participants will make a hummingbird feeder.
• Wednesday, August 7, from 1 to 2 pm. Led by Charlotte Neaton, participants, ages 8 and up, will craft some crazy looking birds.
• Tuesday, August 13, at 6:30 pm – Summer Reading Closing Ceremony and Party. Children, family and friends, please join us for the presentation of Reading Certificates. We will have snacks and entertainment.

Local Students Graduate From Tech Valley High School
Twenty-nine students from across the Tech Valley Region closed one chapter of their learning careers Saturday, June 15, as they graduated from Tech Valley High School. But for all of the graduates, the next chapter of learning is right around the corner as 93 percent of the class is heading on to college and the remaining two students are enlisting in the United States Air Force to pursue careers as officers and pilots.

Local Historian Named Grand Marshal Of Berlin July 4th Parade

The Berlin July 4th Parade Committee is pleased to announce that Sharon Klein, Berlin native and Town Historian, has been chosen as Grand Marshal for this year’s Independence Day parade to be held on Thursday, July 4, at 11 am. Sharon is a Charter Member of the Taconic Valley Historical Society, founded in 1973, having served as President and numerous times as Secretary. She is currently Historian for the Town of Berlin, a post she has held since January 1997.
