Grafton Lakes State Park will host the second annual Pets in the Park Day on Saturday, September 14. The event will take place at the Deerfield Pavilion from 11 am to 3 pm and is free with Park admission. Local pet rescue agencies will be in attendance with adoptable dogs, including Pepper Tree Rescue, Forever Home Grey Hounds, Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and Out of the Pits. There will be many vendors of pet goods and pet care groups in attendance, including All Dawgs Training Services which will assist attendees with their dog training questions. Other attractions include a dog play area and guided hikes.
There will also be food, a bake sale and raffles. Live music will be provided by the Stray Dogs with Brunswick Barbeque and Brew selling food at the event as well. All proceeds from the raffles and bake sale will be donated to the rescue agencies.

Fall Home-School Series At Dyken Pond
The Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center is offering a home-school series this fall for students of all ages every Tuesday for six weeks beginning September 10 and running until October 15. Each Tuesday a program will offer a different theme and will run from 1 to 4 pm. Programs will teach students about tree identification, differences in ecosystems, wildlife studies and general ecology. There is a $5 per student fee, and students can attend any or all programs. Grafton – Marie A. (Schermerhorn) Sweet of Grafton, NY, died on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY, after a brief illness.
Born on July 28, 1930, Marie was the daughter of the late Mildred and Henry Schermerhorn and the wife of the late Rufus C. Sweet. She was a life long resident of Grafton, educated in Grafton’s Toad Point one room school, and she attended the Walter A. Wood High School in Hoosick Falls, NY.

Grafton Town Board Action – Tangled Finances

Grafton Supervisor Frank Higgins had a lot of activity to report on this month.
He said the IRS had initiated a compliance check because they did not receive a quarterly report for the second quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013. He said the new bookkeeper had completed and sent the missing reports, but there is a possibility that the IRS will fine the Town for the tardy reports.

The Rensselaer County Legislature – Two Eastwick Families Recognized For Achievement

Two families from the Eastwick area came to the well of the Rensselaer County Legislature on Tuesday to receive copies of resolutions passed at earlier sessions. One was the extended family behind two very successful enterprises in North Hoosick, J.A. Bradley and Hoosick True Value Hardware. The other was the family of Reverend William O’Dell of Grafton, whose life was memorialized by the Legislature at the adjournment of the July meeting.

28th Annual Run For The Roses Held Under Blue Skies

Brilliant sunshine and cool breezes welcomed runners for the 28th Annual Run for the Roses on Sunday, August 11. A benefit for the local Grafton Community Library, the race had 136 runners participate in the 5k. Their ages ranged from 8 to 72 and all completed the strenuous course. Fifteen youth participated in the Fun Run as well. In addition, a Nature Walk was held to benefit the Courtney Carelli Literacy Foundation, with participants walking around picturesque Shaver Pond.

Grafton VFD And Ladies Auxiliary Breakfast
The Grafton Volunteer Fire Department along with the Grafton Ladies Auxiliary will be holding an All You Can Eat Buffet Breakfast on Saturday, August 31, from 8 to 11 am at the Grafton VFW – Fire Hall on South Road (County Route 85).
Belgian waffles, pancakes, French toast, eggs (made to order), sausage gravy & biscuits, bacon, sausage, home fries, toast, orange juice, coffee and milk are on the menu. The cost is $9 per adult, $4 for kids 12 and under and free for kids five and under.

About 100 bikers roared out of Gardner’s field on Route 22 in Stephentown on Saturday morning starting on the tenth and final Ryan & Courtney Memorial Motorcycle Run. The Run through three states, and the Pig Roast that follows, has been a tribute to Ryan Gardner and Courtney Carelli whose young lives ended prematurely in 2004 in a tragic auto accident.
