Perhaps the best part of the Rensselaer County Legislature’s monthly meeting is the presentation period before the regular business starts. The presentations to the families of deceased pillars of the community, those who have made the history of the County, are quite emotional and moving, such as the presentation on Tuesday to the husband of Cathy Wickswat, a farming agent for the Cornell Cooperative Extension, which honored her for her service to the farming community in the Capital District. At the other end of life’s road are the presentations to the County’s youth who are beginning to leave their mark on the community. On Tuesday the presentations to the Hoosick Falls Central School bowling and wrestling teams heralded the future of these dedicated, hard working, talented, young people.

The Poestenkill Historical Society invites the public to its program on Tuesday, April 23, at 7 pm, held in the Poestenkill Town Hall (Rt. 351). April’s program will be on the life of Margaret Tobin Brown aka The Unsinkable Molly Brown presented by Phyllis Chapman of Eagle Bridge.
Chapman, who portrays various women in history, will come in the costume of the period. Molly Brown was born July 18, 1867, died during the Great Depression and is buried in Westbury, NY. Margaret Brown was a remarkable woman of her time; she and her husband discovered a gold mine and became very wealthy. She was extremely active in many causes. She fought for Women’s Suffrage, created a juvenile court system and ran for office in the Congress, but she decided to relocate to Europe at the beginning of WW I and volunteered as an ambulance driver. She became famous due to her survival of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 after exhorting the crew of Lifeboat No. 6 to return to look for survivors. She became known after her death as “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.”
