Grafton Lakes State Park October Events

• Wednesdays, October 17, 24 and 31 at 4 pm – Wandering Wednesdays with Friends member Dorothy Surprise.  Come explore the Park and see the fall foliage. To register visit www.meetup.com/friendsofgraftonlakesstatepark.
• Saturday, October 13 – Treasure Hunt at  1 pm. Learn how to use an orienteering map and compass to track down treasures in the Park. This is a fun family activity – a one mile treasure hunt trek. Space is limited so please pre-register by calling 279-1155. The  fee is $2 per person or $5 per family. The group will meet at the amphitheater.
• Wednesday, October 17 – Trail Advisory Meeting at 7 pm.  How do we make our trail system even better? Come share your ideas. Meet at the Park Office.

Dyken Pond Survival Skills Workshop

The Magic of Fire Workshop will be held on Sunday, October 14, from 10 am until 3:30 pm. Learn how to start a fire using common available materials such as fungus, bark and an empty bottle. Make your own bow drill set, proving that you can rub two sticks together to get fire. Various ancient techniques will be covered with enough practice time to create competent and skilled fire makers.
This workshop is for older teens and adults, beginners and more experienced alike. The fee is $20, $15 for members. Pre-registration is required .The program is limited to 15 people. Register by contacting Dyken Pond Center at 518-658-2055 or dykenpond@fairpoint.net. Please register early.

Grafton Trail Riders Tradition Lives On

Thanks to the dedicated members and gracious landowners, the Over the Mountain Ride was a huge success the weekend of September 22 and 23, with over 85 people participating in the weekend events.  The morning started out with heavy fog at the top of the Petersburgh Pass, but the skies cleared up for the beautiful view at the top of the mountain. Birthday Celebration In Grafton For Harold Goyer

On Saturday, September 29, Grafton residents celebrated Harold Goyer’s 80th birthday at the Grafton V.F.W. on South Road. Goyer served on the Grafton Highway Department for many years and was a longtime member of the Grafton Fire Department.

The Coast Guard At The Grafton Historical Society Meeting

The Grafton Historical Society’s October meeting will be held at the Grafton Town Hall on October 17 at 7 pm. Charles Poltenson, Flotilla Commander of United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Crescent, will be providing an overview of the history of the United States Coast Guard and the history and role of the Auxiliary.

Pre-registration and a $5 materials fee is required, payable at registration.  Choose one class date. The minimum age to attend is 10 and the youngster must be accompanied by an adult.

Linda J. Gentner

Pittstown – Linda J. Simpson Gentner, 64, of Tamarac Road, Pittstown, NY,  died on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at the home of her daughter, Jeanne, surrounded by her loving family, under the care of Community Hospice of Rensselaer County.
Born in Troy, NY, on March 15, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Estella McGuire Simpson. She was the wife of the late Dennis “Butch” Gentner, who died on December 1, 1998. They were married in Grafton, NY, on June 16, 1989.

And The Gun Range Shall Never Die – Grafton Planning Board Action

Les McDermott is resubmitting his application, with amendments, for a shooting range at 303 Old Siek Road in Grafton. He had withdrawn his application for a shooting range and gun shop at last month’s Grafton Planning Board meeting in the face of severe criticism from his neighbors. He had invested time and energy in landscaping his property with high berms to stop bullets and in filing a Long Form Environmental Impact Statement, which requires lots of documentation. Having no site plan registered meant that McDermott could invite friends and guests to come shoot  as long as they were shooting 500 feet away from anybody else’s building structures, according to the NYS DEC regulations. No site plan review meant, essentially, that the Town had no control over the shooting activities on the McDermott property.
