The Sullivan Jones VFW Post 7466 located on Veterans Street in Poestenkill, will be having its monthly buffet breakfast on September 9 from 8 to 11 am. The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children 5 to 12 and free for children under 5. The buffet includes eggs, sausage, home fries, pancakes, French toast sticks, fruit, toast, juice, coffee and tea.

Grafton Planning Board Dodges A Bullet

The expected brouhaha concerning Les McDermott’s proposal for a shooting range and gun store on his property at 303 Old Siek Road did not materialize at the Grafton Planning Board meeting on Monday, August 20. Only two of the people who spoke so vociferously at the public hearing last month were present, and there was no discussion about the shooting range. The reason for this turn of events was made clear at the beginning of the regular meeting when Planning Board Chairman Tom Withcuskey read a letter from McDermott withdrawing his site plan application “due to the recent personal and unfounded attacks on my character from my neighbors, or should I say, property owners.”

I am concerned with the recent letter to the editor about the Grafton Town summer program. I wasn’t aware that there was a threat for the program to end, or be cut more, until I read the letter in the Eastwick Press.
The program keeps getting cut each year.

Letter To The Editor – A Clarification On Assessor Law
To the editor:
During the local elections in the Town in 2011, one of the primary planks of the Democratic and Grafton Citizens Party platform was a promise to attempt to amend Local Law # 1 of 2010, to allow for a permissive referendum on the questions of an appointed versus elected assessor(s). After a significant amount of research into the matter, it is now clear that this is legally not possible. A number of State laws dating back as far as 1970 have led the NYS Office of the Comptroller to put out a legal opinion to towns that have made such a switch and have attempted to reconsider, that no provisions exist to allow for this to legally be done.
