Volunteers Needed At GLSP And Dyken Pond By May 30 For National Trails Day
National Trails Day is the perfect opportunity to help clean up local parks. On Saturday, June 2, the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park and the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center will be hosting the Nineteenth Annual National Trails Day – the nation’s annual celebration of trails. Both parks invite volunteers of all ages to help clean up and improve trails on Saturday morning and indulge in the trail activities they enjoy most in the afternoon.

May 26, Saturday – Swimming Open Weekends at Cherry Plain State Park. Call the Park at 733-5400.
• Memorial Day Weekend at Grafton Lakes State Park – Swimming opens for season. Weekly swimming schedule is Friday-Tuesday from 10 am to 6 pm.
May 26, Saturday – Aliens in Your Backyard – The Mysterious World of Bugs, 2:30 pm. The group meets at the beach program tent. Join our Park Naturalists in exploring and discovering the strange and fascinating creatures that exist all around us.
May 28, Monday – Memorial Day Sand Sculpture Contest with prizes for all participants in multiple age categories. Sign up at 12 pm at the Beach Nature Center and build until 2 pm. Judging is from 2 to 3 pm. Show your creativity and your skill with sand on Long Pond Beach!

Dyken Pond June Events
June 2
•National Trails Day – 9 am to 12 noon; volunteer for trail clean-up, 9 am – coffee and registration, 9:30 – 12 – trail work, 12 noon – free barbecue for all volunteers, Pre-registration is required for the barbecue so we can plan enough food.
• Full Strawberry Moon Hike with Lisa Hoyt – 7 pm; twilight hike finishing with a campfire under the almost full moon. Bring a snack and or drink for the campfire. This event is free. No pre-registration is needed.
June 3
• Camo Camp with Dan Yacobellis – 9:30 am to 3:30 pm; learn to move unnoticed and in shadows; camouflage using color, movement and sound; experiment with technique and then practice in forest exercises. This training is useful for hunters, nature photographers and wildlife watchers and is just fun. this event is for ages 9 and older and adults. Pre-registration is required, and the group is limited to 15 people. The fee is $10, $5 for members.
June 23
• Primitive Fire Making with Dan Yacobellis – 9:30 am to 3:30 pm; learn primitive fire building techniques. Participants will make their own bow-drill set. Pre-registration is required, and the group is limited to 15 people. The fee is $15, $10 for members.

Grafton Town Board Action – Conflict On The Board

The Grafton Town Board meeting on Monday was run by Deputy Supervisor Cathy Goyer because Supervisor Ray Darling has a medical condition which makes him temporarily unable to do the job. Goyer said she has been handling the day to day business of the Supervisor for two or three weeks so far.

Petersburgh Troop 222 Helps Clean Up Trails At GLSP

Boy Scouts from Troop 222 Petersburgh helped the Grafton Lake State Park over the weekend of May 4-6. Nine Boy Scouts, their Leaders and some family members cleaned out the woods at the Park. Grafton Lakes State Park was the site of a Scout invasion – over 200 Boy Scouts camped, cleaned and had a fun filled weekend in the Park. The Grafton Community Library, located at 2455 NY Route 2, will be the site of a multi-sale event on Saturday, May 19. Doors open at 8 am for the Plant and Book Sale which will run until 1 pm.
