St. Mary’s Academy Open House

St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls will be holding an Open House for Perspective Parents on Monday May 4 from 6 to 7 pm.

St. Mary’s offers a Full Day Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4 program five days a week.  Before Care is available beginning at 7 am. and After Care is available until 6 pm.  St. Mary’s Academy is currently accepting Open Enrollment for grades K-8.  Call today for a tour!! 686-4314.

Darwin Crandall

Hoosick Falls – Darwin F. Crandall, 93, passed away on Thursday April 23, at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls. He resided on Wood Park Lane with his wife Lillian (Diaduk) Crandall.

Darwin was born on February 16, 1922, in Hoosick Falls, son of the late Oliver and Viola (Babcock) Crandall. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. Darwin was employed at Alteck in Watervliet, New York as a truck driver. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and golf. Darwin was a member of the Grafton VFW #6340 and the American Legion Post #13 in Bennington, Vermont.

Survivors other than his wife Lillian include his sister Shirley Wager, two half sisters Joyce and Caroline and two half brothers Dale and Wayne Crandall.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, New York. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, 21 Danforth Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090.

HF Village Budget Includes Tax Increase of 1.5%

After the Public Hearing on the Village of Hoosick Falls 2015-2016 Budget last Tuesday the Board approved the budget, which includes a 1.5% property  tax increase. “This is a very lean budget,” said Mayor David Borge. “It’s an increase from a $3.2 million dollar budget to a $3.3 million dollar budget that includes insurance increases and a two percent increase for contracted services for union and non-union employees. Hoosick Falls Country Club Re-Opens

After a long, cold winter, the Hoosick Falls Country Club has re-opened.  On July 16, 2014, there was a kitchen fire that put the kitchen in the clubhouse out of commission and also resulted in damage in the dining area.  The Country Club shut down entirely in late October. Since that time the Club worked with the insurance company to determine the cost to repair the kitchen and dining areas, and finally came to an agreeable amount at the end of January.

Second Annual Symphonic And Community Band Concert

After the success of the first combined band concert last year it was immediately planned for a second event. This concert will be held on Wednesday evening, April 29, at 7:30 pm. The location is the stage of Hoosick Falls Central School.

The Symphonic band of thirty five members under the direction of Rob Allen will open the program with: Children of the Shrine March by James Swearingen, Of Dark Lords and Ancient Kings by Roland Barrett,  Novo Lenio by Samuel Hazo, Stairway to Heaven by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant arranged by Frank Erickson.

The Hoosick Falls Community Band directed by Bill Gaillard will present; Silvercrest March by James Swearingen, Dragonheart by Randy Edelman and arranged by Frank Bernaerts, Ensenda Overture by Joseph Olivadoti, Man of LaMancha by Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion arranged by Frank Erickson and New York, New York by John Kander and Fred Ebb arranged by Frank Cofield.

The combined bands totaling ninety musicians will present: Invicta by James Swearingen (conducted by Bill Gaillard), Under an Irish Sky by Larry Neek, Shipwrecked by Ryan Nowlin (conducted by Rob Allen), 1812 Overture by Peter Tschaikovsky arranged by Mark Williams.

Two Defensive Driving Courses

Two AARP Defensive Driving Courses for Seniors will be offered this Spring: at the Hoosick Falls Senior Center on Thursday, April 30 from 9 am to 3:30 pm, and at Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Road, in Grafton.

The cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members.   Call 686-7561 to reserve a seat in Hoosick Falls. Call Penny at 279-3413 or stop by the center to reserve a space in Grafton.

Lyman S. Snyder

Ballston Spa – Lyman S. Snyder, 82, died Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Saratoga Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing in Ballston Spa.  Born in Petersburgh on August 19, 1932, he was the son of the late William C. and Jessie Jones Snyder.

Mr. Snyder was raised in Petersburgh and attended Hoosick Falls High School.  He drilled water wells for a brief period and then was employed by the Nancy Shoe Company and the Wood Flong, both in Hoosick Falls and  W.C. Cowee, Inc. in Berlin.  Most recently he was employed by Oak Industries in Hoosick Falls before retiring in the early 1990’s.

Lyman lived in Hoosick Falls for many years before moving to Cincinnati, OH in 2000 where he lived for eight years.  In 2009, he returned to the area and lived in the Doubleday Woods Apartments in Ballston Spa.

He enjoyed collecting coins, horseracing and bowling at the Barbecue Recreation in Hoosick Falls.

Lyman is the beloved husband of 55 years of Doris M. Brandalik Snyder; devoted father of Bruce (Cathy) Snyder of Yonkers, NY, Kenneth (Cathy) Snyder of Stormville, NY and Kelly Miller of Clifton Park; stepfather of Susan Maruca of Cincinnati, OH; grandfather of Christopher, Lauren, Steven, Jacob, Kristy, Kimberly and four great- grandchildren; brother of William (Janet) Snyder of Petersburgh, Mary Lou Hartnett of Bennington, VT and the late Edna Barnhart. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are private at the convenience of the family under the direction of the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home in Petersburgh.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 155 Washington Avenue, Suite 210, Albany, NY  12210 or to the American Diabetes Association, 2 Pine West Plaza, Suite 204, Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, NY  12205.
