Walking In Remembrance And In Hope

People began to gather in front of St. Mark’s Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls about 5:30 Sunday evening. Some lit luminaries. Others carried candles. Many carried photos of loved ones lost to suicide. They gathered as a reminder that there is help out there for those contemplating the taking of his or her own life.

The Life Of A Mill Worker

On Sunday evening, October 4, residents of Wood Park and Woodbridge Heights had an opportunity to step back in time with Phyllis Chapman. Chapman, in period dress, has been portraying historic figures for 16 years, starting at the Bennington Museum. Sunday she appeared as Lucy Larcom, a nineteenth century textile mill worker, author, poet and teacher. According to Chapman Lucy was the second youngest of eight children whose widowed mother came to Lowell, MA, with her younger children to supervise a boarding house for mill workers. Lucy went to school at first but began working at the textile mill in 1837, at age 11, to help support the family.

HACA Prepares For Holiday Food Distribution

$50 Fills A Basket

Higher prices, reductions in Food Stamp allocations and fewer cash donations could make for skimpy Holiday food baskets this year, according to HACA Director Dianne Hosterman. The organization has distributed free baskets of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner ingredients to income eligible Hoosick area residents for the past 35 years. A Masquerade Cabaret In Hoosick Falls

A Masquerade Cabaret will be held Saturday evening, November 1, at the HAYC3 Armory in Hoosick Falls. The show will begin at 7 pm. Underground Railroad At The Center

The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls is hosting a presentation by Rensselaer County Historical Society on the Underground Railroad in Rensselaer and Washington Counties on October 15 from 10 to 11 am at The Center, 21 Danforth Street, Hoosick Falls.

This presentation is free and open to the public.

Hoosick Falls And Granville Central Schools Join To Tackle Hunger

The fourth annual Fill the Bus Food Drive benefiting the Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA) Food Pantry will take place in Hoosick Falls from October 14 to 17. The students of Hoosick Falls Central School (HFCS) are encouraged to bring food throughout the week. On Friday, October 17, at the HFCS Homecoming football game the bus will be open for the public to fill it up. This year Granville Central  School will be joining in to help “Tackle Hunger.”

The HACA Food Pantry serves the greater Hoosick Falls community by supplying food and toiletries to over 1,700 households per year. This year the Food Pantry has served over 24,000 meals thus far, and the holidays are quickly approaching.

Please come celebrate Homecoming and support those in need at the same time by helping to Fill the Bus.

Pumpkinpalooza 6 – Very Special For Hoosick Falls

The fog hadn’t lifted Saturday morning, September 27, when activities were going full swing in Hoosick Falls. Tractors were rumbling into Wood Park, volunteers were signing up folks and getting the roadway ready for the Rolf Max Sternberg 5k Race and Girl Scouts and leaders were busy at the Immaculate Conception Church cooking pancakes for the crowd to come. And that was all before 8 am!

Public Hearing On The Old St. Mary’s Development

On Wednesday, October 1, Jason Von Guinness, accompanied by his wife Jessica, attended a public hearing of the Hoosick Falls Planning Board to discuss his plan to turn the old St. Mary’s Building into six one bedroom 1,600 square foot apartments and to retain the entire basement for living quarters for him and his wife. Final DEA Drug Drop Off Was Saturday

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration recently announced that it will no longer conduct Drug Drop Off Days. The Agency is working on plans for unused prescription drugs to be turned in at pharmacies, hospitals and other facilities instead.
