Biggest Ever McGovern Volleyball Tournament

On Saturday, September 6, the Sandbar was packed with folks of all ages. They were gathered to celebrate the lives of four people who were taken from them too soon. It began 15 years ago with Karen McGovern. She was a vibrant and valiant fighter who succumbed to cancer at age 32. Thomas G. Restino Honored By Rensselaer County

On Monday morning, September 8, as part of Rensselaer County’s monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran Program, Thomas G. Restino was recognized. Receiving the many honors bestowed on his father was Justice Tom Restino, Jr. The ceremony, which began with Posting of the Colors by Lansingburgh veterans, was held in the Legislative Chambers. The event honored Restino’s life as a family man, veteran and community servant.

Ruth Burns

Hoosick Falls – Ruth Josephine Laut Burns, 92, died peacefully Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at the Schuyler Ridge Nursing Facility in Clifton Park, NY. Ruth was born in Albany, NY, on February 5, 1922, and was the loving daughter of the late George and Josephine Laut. Ruth was a graduate of Albany High School and Syracuse University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Public Health Nursing. Ruth worked as a Registered Nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany upon its opening and was later employed by Rensselaer County as a Public Health Nurse serving Hoosick Falls, NY, and the surrounding communities for over thirty five years.

Ruth had resided in Hoosick Falls, where she and her late husband raised their two children, and she was later a resident of Clifton Park and Coburg Village in Rexford, NY. After the death of her husband in 1970, Ruth devoted her life to the raising of her children and, later, her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, reading and knitting. She was an active member of the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church, serving as President of the Susannah Wesley Circle and a member of Over the Speed Limit. She was involved with her local Garden Club and Chairman of their Herb Committee. She was also a member of the Clifton Park Study Club.

Ruth was the wife of the late William E. Burns, mother of Jonathan S. Burns and wife Sue of Hoosick Falls and Judith L. LaVardera and husband Frank of Clifton Park. She was also the grandmother of Stephanie LaVardera, Jonathan W. Burns, Jennifer LaVardera, Jeremy Burns and Bradley Burns. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Burns is pre-deceased by her brothers, George Laut Jr., Walter C. Laut and Robert A. Laut.

There will be no calling hours, and the burial will be private. There will be a memorial service at the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church on Monday, September 15, at 11 am. Arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home in Hoosick Falls. Mrs. Burns asked that anyone wishing to should send a donation, in her memory, to the charity of their choice.

Rev. Donna Elia’s 25th Anniversary

On Sunday September 14, First United Church, Presbyterian in Hoosick Falls will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ordination of our pastor, Rev. Donna Elia.

Donna Elia grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from LaSalle University. After teaching in the School District of Philadelphia for several years, she felt a call to ordained ministry and went to Princeton Theological Seminary, receiving her Master of Divinity degree in 1989. After graduation, she was called to be pastor of Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church, where she served until 1995. She then served as associate pastor and then as acting head of staff of First Presbyterian Church in Albany. In October 2000, Rev. Elia accepted the position of executive director of Troy Area United Ministries, an ecumenical organization committed to seeking the social and spiritual well being of people in Rensselaer County. Since January 2007 she has been the stated supply pastor of First United Church in Hoosick Falls.

During the 10:30 service, special music will be provided by Ms. Peggy Shalit on violin and the First United Choir will present the anthem “I Give My Life.” A reception will follow at 11:30 in the Church hall.

First United Church, Presbyterian is located on upper Main Street next to the medical office building (formerly CHP). The Church is accessible by those with disabilities. For more information, contact Elder Joyce Brewer at 686-4942 or Elder John Button at 686-7678.

Darlene M. Brundige

Hoosick Falls – Darlene M. Brundige, 54, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, September 5, 2014, at the Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, NY. She had resided there for the past several years. She was the daughter of Carol Betit of Hoosick Falls and the late Normand Betit Sr.

Darlene was born on March 18, 1960, in Cambridge, NY. She graduated from Hoosick Falls Central School and was formerly employed at the Eddy in Troy, NY, as a health aid. Darlene loved spending time with her family and playing bingo.

Survivors, other than her mother Carol, include her children, Marchell Leva and Gary and wife Nicole Brundige, her siblings, Shannon and husband James Chaplin, Penny and husband Bruce Rawling, Scott and wife Charlene Betit, Shawn Betit, Andrea and husband Scott Brophy and Normand Betit Jr. and wife Christina, her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Janessa and Alyssa Leva, Anessa, Krista, Anthony and Breyden Brundige. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, New York, 12090. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation through the funeral home.

According to the internet Barn Quilt History, “The concept of barn quilts began with Donna Sue Groves and her wish to honor her mother, Maxine, and her Appalachian heritage by having a painted quilt hung on her barn in Adams County, Ohio. As is often the case, good ideas fall by the wayside when work and other obligations intervene. Donna Sue mentioned the project from time to time for several years until she was encouraged by her friends to go ahead and paint that quilt square. Liberty Flies! Hoosick Civil War Soldiers Honored

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the first week in August, Hoosick Falls history was made when 13 Town of Hoosick men who were killed in action in the Civil War were honored as Voice of a Vet’s Tribute Flag (Liberty) flew over the sites where these men are buried.
