Hoosick Falls Artist Aaron Buzzinski’s Paintings At The Armory And Singing At The Owl’s Nest

January 31, 2014 By eastwickpress

Paintings and mixed-media work by Hoosick Falls artist Aaron Buzzinski will be on display in 120gallery90 at The Armory through the month of February. The opening reception begins at 6 pm on Friday, January 31. At 7 pm that same evening a local mixed a cappella quartet will perform a wide variety of singing styles including barbershop, gospel, jazz and contemporary songs.

Aaron Buzzinski was born in Scranton, PA, but grew up in Hoosick. He is a graduate of HFCS. He spent much of his time and honed his artistic skills designing, building and painting sets for the High School Drama Club. More recently he has been involved with HAYC3 creating magical spaces for children at The Youth Center and events at The Armory and as the Resident Artist with the organization.

“I love the architecture, the roof lines, the front porches, the shingle patterns and slate roofs, the shapes of the windows in the houses and the buildings in Hoosick Falls,” said Buzzinski. “I’ve spent a lot of time exploring the nooks and crannies of this town, always looking for the bigger picture while focusing on the details. There’s so much beauty hidden in plain sight.” The hills and fields of Hoosick are also an inspiration for him. The graceful lines of the gently rolling hills and trees and even the vertical strength of the telephone poles that run perpendicular are emphasized in his East Hoosick landscape paintings.

Some of the materials you will see in the works in this show include repurposed wood and barn board, acrylic paint, latex house paint, paper from a variety of sources, actual lights, assorted boxes and more. His work is influenced by the paintings of American artist Edward Hopper.

The Hoosick Artist Guild project on exhibit concurrently in the gallery is appropriately called “Luminous.” Each artist has worked with vastly different materials, but all of the artworks light up.

Hubbard Hall Production of Parallel Lives Is Poignant And Funny

January 24, 2014 By eastwickpress

Review by Alex Brooks

Hubbard Hall has opened a new production of the 80s feminist show Parallel Lives in their small black box theater

A series of loosely related vignettes about the dilemma of being a woman in the modern world, faced with the conundrums of religion and sex, clueless men, capricious supreme beings, and over-the-top feminists. Although at times it feels a bit dated, this show has moments of poignancy and hilarity that are worth the wait.

Two actresses, Jeannine Haas and Julie Waggoner, handle all the parts in these two-person sketches, and they are accomplished actresses who make the most of the material. They play young and old, male and female. Haas in particular is good at transforming herself into a male character, not with elaborate costuming, but just by the way she speaks and acts.

The script was written and first performed by Kathy Najimy (co-star with Whoopie Goldberg of Sister Act) and Mo Gaffney in the 1980s. Haas and Waggoner originated this version of the show in 2009, when they performed it in a variety of venues in and around Northampton, MA.. The current Hubbard Hall production, co-produced by Haas’ company Pauline Productions, is a reprise of that show. These are characters they know well, and they are able to play them with great assurance and panache. Although the culturally specific references are aimed more at a Northampton audience than an Eastwick audience, the charm of the show does not rely on its specific context as much as it does on the chemistry between Haas and Waggoner, the way they are able to create unexpectedly deep moments in the midst of short comic sketches.

Remaining performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm Jan. 24-25 and Jan 31-Feb 1, and Sundays at 2 pm Jan 26 and Feb 2 in the small Freight Depot Theater behind Hubbard Hall.

For more information, call Hubbard Hall at 518-677-2495 or visit their web site at www.hubbardhall.org. Hubbard Hall is at 25 East Main Street in Cambridge, NY.
