Former WCW Building May Soon Be In County Hands

The former WCW building at 1 Mechanic Street, one of two buildings on adjoining properties owned by JW Realty, may soon and finally belong to Rensselaer County.
The WCW company left the Mechanic Street building in the autumn of 2011 after a long battle over the building’s tax assessment. Because of the tax dispute, the building was to be taken over by the County for non-payment of taxes. Public opinion was that the building would soon be put on the market by the County. Armory Shines As A Result Of Volunteer Days

“It was inspirational,” said HAYC3 volunteers and staff of the Volunteer Days crew that helped at the Armory on Saturday and Sunday, January 12 and 13. “People came with cleaning supplies, brooms, food, cookies,” said Jason Jensen. The volunteers were all ages, from kids to Seniors. “Whole families came,” Jensen added. Between the work crews from the Rensselaer County Jail and the 70 plus weekend volunteers, the building is being transformed.

Learn To Skate – Registration For Local Skaters
The Hoosick Friends of Skating Club will hold skating lesson registration on Saturday, January 19, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Rcynolds-GiIchrest Skating Rink on Barton Avenue in Hoosick Falls. The Club offers 8 half-hour basic skills lessons in figure and hockey skating fundamentals following the United Stares Figure Skating Association’s “Skate With US” program.
Individuals must be 5 years of age or older to participate. Classes are held twice a week for four weeks on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, starting Wednesday, January 23. The cost tor all 8 lessons is $40 for residents (Town/Village of Hoosick Falls) and S50 for non-residents. There will be a $10 discount tor families with three or more registrants.

Hoosick Lions Need Used Eyeglasses And Hearing Aids
The Town of Hoosick Lions Club would like you to know there are spots around town to drop off used eyeglasses and hearing aids in Lions Club boxes. Our organization brings hundreds of eyeglasses to Albany where they are repaired, tested and sorted by prescription and mailed to other countries. The need is great. We occasionally receive donated hearing aids as well, which are greatly appreciated. Clara Salluzzo
Hoosick Falls – Clara Salluzzo, 94, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013, at her daughter’s residence in Glenmont, NY. Clara formerly resided on First Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, and was the wife of the late Joseph Salluzzo.
Born on June 13, 1918, in Johnsonville, NY, Clara was the daughter of the late Fred and Eva (Gibbons) Motsiff. She worked at the Specialty Company in Hoosick Falls for many years. In her retirement Clara enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting, sewing and cooking delicious meals for her family at her home. Clara will be remembered most as a devoted mother and grandmother. She dedicated her life to her family and will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew her.

Village of Hoosick Falls Board Action – Three Month Trial Period For Existing Zoning Laws

In October Hoosick Falls Village Mayor Matt Monahan asked Trustees David Borge and Jeremy Driscoll to review the Village’s zoning laws. At the January 8 regular meeting of the Board Borge reported that the 1992 amended law stated there would be no development in residential zones. Single houses that had been converted into duplexes or apartment houses prior to 1992 were grandfathered. However, since that law was put in place, several properties in the zone have added apartments. Siena Basketball Players Visit St. Mary’s Academy

At St. Mary’s Academy Tuesday morning students heard from Siena College Men’s and Women’s basketball players about the perseverance necessary to practice basketball many hours a week, play in basketball games and find time to study and keep up good grades. The players answered students’ questions, ran through some drills with them and then had a breakout session with girls and boys from grades three to eight. The visit ended with an autograph session for all the students, from kindergarten through grade eight.

HFCS PTA January Family Movie Night
Hoosick Falls Central School PTA announces its January family night film series co-sponsored with the Hoosick Federal Credit Union. Here’s an opportunity for families to enjoy an outing free of charge. The movie scheduled is Dolphin Tale, described by film critic Roger Ebert as “a sweet, feel-good film about a boy who helps save a dolphin and how the dolphin then helps save him.” The film airs on Friday, January 25, at 6 pm in the High School auditorium. Doors open at 5:30 pm and drinks, popcorn and pizza will be for sale in the Elementary Cafeteria with the proceeds going to the Hoosick Falls PTA. This movie is rated PG (for some mild thematic elements).
The event is open to the general public, and school spirit items will be available for sale.
