John W. Kasavicha

North Hoosick – John W. Kasavicha, 72, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2014. He had resided on Cobble Hill Road in North Hoosick, NY, with his wife Erma (Kelly) Kasavicha.

Born on November 17, 1942, John was the son of the late Francis and Wilma (Ross) Kasavicha. He graduated from the Hoosick Falls High School. John served in the United States Navy from 1984 until retiring in1991. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, baseball and teaching his grandson to drive a tractor.

Survivors, other than his wife Erma, include his son, John W. Kasavicha of Brownsville, TX, his daughter, Kristine Symonds of Hoosick Falls, NY, his brother, Frank Kasavicha of Poestenkill, NY, and his grandson, Justin William Symonds.

The funeral service was Thursday, October 16, at 11 am from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial will be at the Gerald B.H. Solomon/Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 am until the start of the service.

Walking In Remembrance And In Hope

People began to gather in front of St. Mark’s Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls about 5:30 Sunday evening. Some lit luminaries. Others carried candles. Many carried photos of loved ones lost to suicide. They gathered as a reminder that there is help out there for those contemplating the taking of his or her own life.

HACA Prepares For Holiday Food Distribution

Higher prices, reductions in Food Stamp allocations and fewer cash donations could make for skimpy Holiday food baskets this year, according to HACA Director Dianne Hosterman. The organization has distributed free baskets of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner ingredients to income eligible Hoosick area residents for the past 35 years. Hoosick Grange had a very interesting meeting on September 24. Master David Cornell conducted the business meeting. Marion Brenenstuhl was in charge of the Lecturer’s program. There were two tables set up with a lot of unusual things on them. Marion called on Omer Brenenstuhl who read two poems. Next Marion Cipperly had a poem titled “Autumn’s Golden Moon,” and Martha Babbitt had a little glass figurine of a black bird, and we were to guess what it was. Marion Cipperly also had a beautiful handwoven basket with a Best of Show ribbon on it. She got the ribbon at the Schaghticoke Fair. She had a few pictures of the Cipperly family from 1909 – 1915. David Filkins had 8 model farms boards with pictures and cows. He painted the cows to be like his grandfather’s. Marion Hynick had a beautiful bag that she bought in Turkey. The bag had pictures of camels on it. Corinne Philpott had two handwritten poems and a picture she took of a river in England that she painted. Burta Burr had tools she uses in painting gold leaf. She had some Ducate Double Gold. She told us that she painted the weather vane in the church in Old Bennington. Carleton Philpott showed what looked like a short pail that was used for ice fishing. It had an oil lantern in it and a little door to keep warm. David Cornell had a box that would cure all ailments patented in 1896 and looked electrical. He had a tool he didn’t know for sure what it was, but Ralph Philpott knew what it was. He also had a 1920 Model T. coil that was used to start the car. Marion Brenenstuhl showed some other mugs or cups that were given to her over 28 years of driving a school bus. She also had 38 blue ribbons, 19 red and ten white she earned at the S. Fair this year. She had a closing thought. Marion had a great program and everyone brought in great things. David Cornell had refreshments.

Our next meeting was on October 8. Marion Cipperly was in charge of the program. Marion had a speaker, Mr. Dean Foster – Headmaster of the Hoosac School. All were welcome to come and hear him. The program started at 8 pm. Refreshment Chairman was Marion Cipperly.

Underground Railroad At The Center

The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls is hosting a presentation by Rensselaer County Historical Society on the Underground Railroad in Rensselaer and Washington Counties on October 15 from 10 to 11 am at The Center, 21 Danforth Street, Hoosick Falls.

This presentation is free and open to the public.

Hoosick Falls And Granville Central Schools Join To Tackle Hunger

The fourth annual Fill the Bus Food Drive benefiting the Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA) Food Pantry will take place in Hoosick Falls from October 14 to 17. The students of Hoosick Falls Central School (HFCS) are encouraged to bring food throughout the week. On Friday, October 17, at the HFCS Homecoming football game the bus will be open for the public to fill it up. This year Granville Central  School will be joining in to help “Tackle Hunger.”

The HACA Food Pantry serves the greater Hoosick Falls community by supplying food and toiletries to over 1,700 households per year. This year the Food Pantry has served over 24,000 meals thus far, and the holidays are quickly approaching.

Please come celebrate Homecoming and support those in need at the same time by helping to Fill the Bus.

Pioneer Fish & Game Club Trapper Training Course

A trapper training course will be offered at the Pioneer Fish & Game Club, Potter Hill Club House, on Saturday, October 25, from 8 am to 4 pm (bring your lunch). This course is mandatory for first time license buyers. Students must attend the entire session, demonstrate proper attitude and safety and pass the test.
