Christmas Cookies And Happy Hearts, This Is How The Holiday Starts

Do you make the best Christmas cookies in Hoosick? Your family and friends say you do – why not find out for sure. Enter your Christmas cookies in the first Annual HAYC3 Christmas Cookie Contest.

Are your cookies chewy or crisp? Sweet or savory? Chocolate? Lemon? Butter-rich? Iced? Have nuts or not? Do you use Grandma’s favorite recipe? Are they a family classic? Something new and different? A concoction of your own invention? Pretty or plain? Complex or simple?

HAYC3 and Hoosick want to know! Our expert cookie taste testers will be on hand at The Pop-Up Holiday Shop at The Armory on Saturday, December 7, to sample all the entries. Just drop off a dozen cookies at The Armory by 10 am. First, Second and third place ribbons will be awarded.

Dates For The Hoosick Artisan Exchange And Market

The Hoosick Falls Artisan Exchange and Market is alive and well and still at The Armory, but the schedule has changed. You can still get locally made goods, fresh produce, an Angel or Tarot Reading, maple syrup, hickory syrup, popcorn and more. The new dates for upcoming markets are December 13, January 31, March 14 and April 25. All are Fridays; all are from 5 to 8 pm.

On those same nights, you can also enjoy other happenings in The Armory, including gallery openings and free music in The Owl’s Nest, among other things.

On December 13, the opening reception for the new George Van Hook and Artist Guild shows are open from 6 to 8 pm in 120gallery90, and Music in Hoosick presents Holiday Jazz by Sage City Six in The Owl’s Nest.

Hoosac School Singers To Perform Boar’s Head/Yule Log Selections At The Victorian Stroll

As part of the Troy Victorian Stroll, Hoosac School singers will perform selections from the “Boar’s Head and Yule Log” Festival at 2 pm on Sunday, December 8, at St. Paul’s Church, 58 Third Street, Troy.  The Hoosac School Boar’s Head and Yule Log Singers are a select group of students in striking Renaissance costumes who will sing songs from the traditional Boar’s Head and Yule Log Pageant.

The Boar’s Head is one of the oldest continuing festivals of the Christmas season, first celebrated at Queen’s College, Oxford, in 1340. Legend has it that a scholar was studying a book of Aristotle while walking through the forest on his way to Christmas Mass. Suddenly he was confronted by an angry wild boar. Having no other weapon, the resourceful Oxonian rammed his metal bound philosophy book down the throat of the charging animal, whereupon the brute choked to death. That night the boar’s head, finely dressed and garnished, was borne in procession to the dining room, accompanied by carolers singing “in honor of the King of Bliss.”

This ceremony was brought to colonial America by the Bouton family, persecuted French Huguenots who had learned of the custom during a period of exile in England. The Boutons settled in Troy and were closely connected with the Episcopal church and its schools, including Hoosac School. St. Paul’s of Troy was the “City Church” of the Tibbits family and as such has significant connection to Hoosac School, which was founded in 1889 by The Reverend Dr. Edward Dudley Tibbits, a member of that famous Troy family.

Hoosac School hosts the Yule Log Christmas celebration/pageant annually.  Its great array of old costumes has been kept intact for many years. Every faculty member and student has a role in the preparation and performance.  Directing the show this year is Music Master Christopher Uhl who said, “The Yule Log is divided into two parts. The first part tells the story of Christ’s birth and its meaning and implications to individual beliefs. The second part is the earthly celebration of that birth and the revelry that accompanied the human celebration – feasting.”

Hoosac School will hold its 123rd celebration of Boar’s Head & Yule Log on Thursday, December 12, 2013.

Hoosick Grange News

On November 13 Hoosick Grange had a delicious covered dish supper followed by Awards Night. The Master, David Cornell, welcomed everyone. The Secretary, Martha Babbitt, read the names of the people getting the awards, and the Master presented the awards.

Robert Bentley, Vera Griswold and Helen Filkins received 70-year certificates. Elsie Marpe and Carrie Schultz will receive 70-year certificates at a later time. Marjorie Herrington and Carleton Philpott received 65-year certificates. Marion Brenenstuhl received her 50-year certificate, and her son Todd Brenenstuhl received his 25-year Silver Star Certificate. Cathleen Hogan will receive her 40-year certificate later. The Secretary had some readings.

The Lecturer had a quiz and then told about the lies your mother told you – like drinking cola will dissolve your teeth – that’s a myth – and don’t touch a toad or you’ll get warts. The Lecturer had a story about chicken hawks and some jokes and stories and a closing thought – He is rich who is satisfied.

Our next meeting is December 11. We are honored to have the Mennonite Singers. The program starts at 7:30 pm (note time change). Refreshments – Grangers bring cookies and goodies, invite family, neighbors and friends.

Coming Concerts In Hoosick Falls

On Sunday, December 15, Hoosick Falls’ big band, The Stardusters, will perform a Christmas program at the Community Alliance Church at 3 pm. The public is cordially invited.

On Wednesday, December 18, the Hoosick Falls Community Band will present its 31st annual Christmas Concert at the First United Presbyterian Church at 7:30 pm.

Hoosick Falls Soccer Club Registration

The Hoosick Falls Soccer Club is now organizing spring travel teams.  If we do not have enough players on a team, we will not be able to register that team in the league.  We hope to have enough players to register all six teams.  If you are interested in registering please go to https://hoosickfallssoccer.sportssignup.com//Login.

Memorial Celebration – Glenn Robert Swalm

A Memorial Celebration of the life of Glenn Robert Swalm, who died October 17, 2013, will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2013, at 2 pm at the Mount Anthony Country Club, 180 Country Club Drive, Bennington, VT.  Please join family and friends in remembering this incredibly diverse and interesting man.

George H. Guile Sr.

Eagle Bridge – George H. Guile Sr., 70, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013, at his residence in Eagle Bridge, NY. He resided with his wife Mary (Sacglione) Guile.

Born on December 7, 1942, in Eagle Bridge, George was the son of the late Clifford J. and Gladys (Hunt) Guile. He was employed at the former Columbia Box/Bennington Paper Board. George loved the outdoors and was a member of the Hoosick Baptist Church and the Bennington Legion. He was always helping other people.

Survivors, other than his wife Mary, include their children, Anna Ropitzky of Eagle Bridge, Maria Harris of Cambridge, NY, George Guile Jr., of Eagle Bridge, James Guile of Charlotte, NC, and Joseph Guile of Bennington, VT, a sister, Anna Kelly of Schenectady, NY, and two brothers, John Guile of Hoosick Falls, NY, and David Guile of Gloversville, NY. George is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Saturday, November 30, at 1 pm from the Hoosick Baptist Church on South Street in Hoosick, NY. Burial followed at the Island Hill Cemetery in Buskirk, NY. Relatives and friends called at the Church on Saturday from 12 pm until the start of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rensselaer County Community Hospice through the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, which is handling the arrangements.
