Healers From Here Relay For Life Team Sponsors

The first annual 5k run/walk for a cure is on April 20 at 9 am in Wood Memorial Park.
Early registration by March 15 costs $15, by April 15 – $20, anytime after April 15 and day of the race – $25. We encourage early registration as it will save time the day of the race. The first 50 registrants will receive a free T-shirt. Following  the race there will be a Kids Fun Race with a $5 entry fee. Cheney Library Story Time – Dig Into Reading

The Cheney Library in Hoosick Falls will begin a Spring story time, “Dig Into Reading,” for preschool children and their caregivers. We will have stories, activities and snacks at 10 am in the Library on March 12, 19, 26 and continue into April on the 9th, 16th and 23rd. We will investigate gardens, dinosaurs, rabbits, underground animals, construction equipment that digs and mud. Please be sure to come and have a wonderful time.

Jo Ann Hawks

Eagle Bridge – Jo Ann Hawks, 71, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. She was the wife of C. Donald Hawks; they resided on Route 22 in Eagle Bridge, NY.
Born on July 14, 1941, in Cambridge, NY, Jo Ann was the daughter of the late Herman and Jean (Bentley) Marsh. Jo Ann graduated from Hoosick Falls Central School. She worked at Fairbanks Express in Hoosick Falls, NY, for thirty-seven years and later with RGI Insurance also in Hoosick Falls. Jo Ann was an avid Hummel collector and NASCAR fan. She enjoyed vacationing with her husband in Hampton Beach, NH, and at Lake Lauderdale, NY.
Survivors, other than her husband Donald, include her sisters, Cherry Millington of Hewitt, TX, Patricia Grennan and husband Bill of Hoosick Falls, Kay Wright and husband Howie of Cambridge and Lori Gardner and husband Jeff of Mesa, AZ, her brother, Donald Marsh and wife Karen of Castleton, NY, and her brother-in-law, Jack Hawks and wife Belva of Georgia. Jo Ann is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Center at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center through the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, which is handling the arrangements.

HACA’s “Taste Of Hoosick” For 2013

Looking for a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in the Town of Hoosick? Come to the “Taste of Hoosick” on Sunday, May 5, from 3 to 6 pm. This popular event, started in 2009, will again be held in the St. Mary’s Academy auditorium. Many local restaurants have committed to participate and showcase their most popular dishes  … and the Hoosick area has some outstanding chefs and chef-owned restaurants.
There will also be live entertainment from the HFCS Jazz Band as well as the wonderful music of other talented local musicians.
The silent auction promises something for everyone, featuring goods and services from the greater Hoosick area. Drop your ticket in the jar to be eligible for numerous door prizes.
Tickets will be available at the HACA Center as well as other locations to be announced.  Pre-event tickets cost $12.50; $15 at the door. Ticket orders can be sent to HAC A,  P.O. Box #1,  Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. Make checks payable to HACA and notate” Taste of Hoosick” in the memo section.
This event is sponsored by the Hoosick Area Church Association, Inc a non-profit organization which sponsors the HACA Food Pantry.  The Food Pantry served 4,585 individuals in 2012.  The number of families seeking service totaled 255, including 279 children, 446 adults and 56 elderly.  Pickups at the Regional Food Bank totaled over 36,000 pounds of perishable and non-perishable food in addition to thousands of pounds of food donated by community organizations, churches and individuals.  Thanks to “Taste of Hoosick 2012” 317 families were provided with food baskets for the holiday season. The goal for 2013 is to further develop the HACA Food Pantry programs to sustain the health, good nutrition and dignity of local families.

Hoosick Grange News

The Grange met on February 13 with Master David Cornell presiding. We were very fortunate the weather was very good. We had a number of Grangers unable to come because of illness. It was the day before St. Valentine’s Day. The Master conducted the business meeting and then it was time for the program.
Martha Babbitt was in charge of the program. Her theme was Valentine’s Day. She told us that St. Valentine was a Christian saint that was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. He was also not supposed to minister to Christians. Legend states he healed the jailer’s daughter and before his execution he wrote a farewell to her and signed it from your Valentine. His feast day is February 14. He was martyred about AD 269 and buried on Via Flaminia. There were other Valentines, one from Temi, a bishop, and a third saint from Africa, also martyred.
Martha had a number of jokes read by different Grangers. She gave us a paper on Health Digest. The title was “Heart Threats You’re Ignoring.” She also had a game on “Guess The Secret Service Code Name.” This was a code name for presidents and family members. Another game was “Brain Smack” on True Romance. This was a hard one. Martha had prizes and candy for all. The Lecturer thanked Martha for a great program. We remembered four Grangers. David Cornell was in charge of delicious refreshments.
The next meeting is on March 13. It will be an open meeting. David Schmidt is in charge of the program. The topic is “Rope, History and Rope Making.” Invite friends and guests. The program will start at 8 pm. Refreshment Chairman is Marion Hynick.
We will also have the Photo Contest that night. Photographs may be entered in the following categories: (1) People, (2) Animals, (3) Scenery/Nature. Photos must be taken by the person submitting the entry and taken sometime between May 1 and April 15 of the current contest year. Size minimum is 4″x6″ to maximum of 11″x14″ including matting if used. Frames are not allowed but the photo must have a rigid backing.

Lip Sync Contest And Kids’ Dance

The North Hoosick Fire Department is sponsoring a lip sync contest at its regular kids’ dance on Friday, March 1, at the Fire Station. The contest will begin at 7 pm and continue through 8 pm. Students participating in the contest are advised to arrive early. Prizes will be based on attendance.
The dance will continue to 10 pm. All students ages 9 to 15 who attend Hoosick Falls Central, Berlin Central, Cambridge Central or St. Mary’s Academy are invited for this night of fun.
