Joseph Crane

Stephentown – Joseph Crane, 81, of Cranston Hill Road, Stephentown, NY, died on Saturday, December 25, 2010, at Springside of Pittsfield, MA, after a long illness.
Born in New York City on May 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Charles and Sylvia Sipkin Crane. Joe was the loving husband of Dianne Tescher Crane, whom he married in Manhattan, NY, on December 26, 1954. They have been full time residents of Stephentown for the past three years after living in Arizona for the previous ten years. They have been a part of the Stephentown community since 1987.

St. Mark’s Winter Concert

Musicians Susan Harwood, Will Hayes, J. Nixon McMillan and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church invite you to a winter afternoon concert on Sunday, January 16, at 4 pm. The concert will feature “three musical addicts” performing great tunes by great composers – the vocal Music of Bach-Gounod, Handel, Faurè and Cèsar Franck, the cello Music of Bach and Vivaldi and the organ Music of Georgi Mushel.

Brainard Church Burns

Fire of undetermined origin pretty much destroyed the old United Methodist Church in Brainard early Wednesday morning. Mary Morris, who lives across Route 20 from the Church, said she heard her dog barking sometime around midnight and wondered why. Later she heard more commotion outside and when she went out to see what was going on she was horrified to see flames shooting out the side windows of the Church. On Friday, December 17, Beatrice Berle of Berle Farm on Beechwood Road in Hoosick welcomed Congressman-elect Chris Gibson, NYS Assemblyman Tony Jordan, Frank Murray, President and CEO, NYSERDA, Scott Collings, Rural Energy Coordinator for NY State, Rural Development Division of the US Dept. of Agriculture, Michael Stangl, Regional VP of Alteris Renewables, area farmers, HFCS students from the Government and Environmental Science classes and the media to the farm to view the pole mounted solar panel system that was recently installed. Fire At Saint-Gobain

Hoosick Falls Fire Chief Robert Bornt said four departments responded to a fire call at Saint-Gobain on McCaffrey St. in Hoosick Falls at 4:30 am Friday, December 17. Two calls were received, said Bornt, one from the plant and another from a cell phone stating there was a fire on the roof of the building. Major Highway Project Planned For Route 2 In Grafton

Grafton Highway Superintendent Herb Hasbrouck and Town Supervisor Allison Kirchner reported they had received a letter from the NYS Department of Transportation informing the Town that the State will begin ditching and repairing 45 small culverts on Route 2 starting in Brunswick in the spring of 2011. Work that requires diverting traffic to County Route 84 and Route 7 will be done during the school summer break. At other times there will be lane shifts with only one traffic lane open. It is believed the work will go from Brunswick to the former Grafton Elementary School.

Stephentown Town Board Action – Dogs And Other Things

With the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets abdicating its responsibility to provide dog tags, issue license renewals or maintain dog licensing data, the Stephentown Town Board at their meeting on Monday passed a new Town dog licensure law to take effect as of January 1.

Petersburgh Town Board Action – About Dogs

The Petersburgh Town Board meeting was primarily about dogs. The first order of business was to approve the boarding agreement with Pondviews Country Kennels, which was on the same terms as last year. It was approved without discussion.
Petersburgh Dog Officer Lynne Torello-Burns is about to start on a dog enumeration for the Town. Various members of the Board recalled dog enumerations being done in the not-too-distant past, but Town Clerk Callie Crisp says she has no record of any previous enumeration.

Gathering Around The Fire

Pleasant weather brought a couple dozen people to the Hoosic River behind the old water treatment plant in Hoosick Falls on Thursday evening, December 16. The pathway to the huge bonfire was lighted with luminaries. The event was sponsored by the Hoosic River Watershed Association and the Village of Hoosick Falls. The warmth of the fire and cheerful voices singing holiday songs made for an enjoyable event. (Bea Peterson photo)
