Voters Reject Berlin Lumber Purchase By Wide Margin

In yet another indication that voters in this economic climate are wary of anything that smacks of new taxes, the proposal for the Town of Berlin to purchase the vacant property of the Berlin Lumber Company suffered a crushing defeat in Monday’s Special Election. The vote count was 131 Yes to 210 No in a rather light turn out.

It’s funny how the germ of an idea can take root and grow quickly into something unique and special. Take nicknames for example. Ask folks in Hoosick Falls and they will rattle off several nicknames in short order. Some folks don’t even know the “real” name of a person with a nickname that’s lasted him or her a lifetime. If that person has remained in Hoosick Falls, the nickname has stuck.

Cropseyville Soldier Receives Leadership Award

James Meltz, a New York State Trooper from Cropseyville, received the USO of Metropolitan New York’s Prestigious George Van Cleave Military Leadership Award at the organization’s Annual Armed Forces Gala & Gold Medal Dinner , on Wednesday, December 9, in Manhattan.

The December Town of Hoosick meeting was an emotional one as it was Supervisor Marilyn Douglas, Town Councilmen Kevin O’Malley and Mark Cottrell’s last meeting. Councilman Cottrell said, “Thank you for the 10 years in office, it was fun. It was a pleasure working with everyone and good luck to the new members coming in.”

Schoony’s: Good Food On Church St.

Richard Schoonmaker of Schaghticoke retired as a Sergeant on the Troy Police Department in February 2008. Not one to sit around, he decided to open a family business. Since his eldest son worked at LaPorto Restaurant in Troy and plans to attend college to study Culinary Arts, opening a Pizza and Deli seemed a good idea. The family business is called Schoony’s, and it is located at 59 Church St. in Hoosick Falls.
