Pittstown VFD BBQ
The Pittstown Volunteer Fire Department will be holding its annual Giffy’s Chicken Barbecue Dinner on October 12 at the Pittstown Fire House, 134 Parker School Road. The price is $9.75 per dinner. The take-out dinners will be served from 4 to 6 pm. For tickets call 663-5773 and leave a message. Tickets are also available at the door. There will also be a Fire Prevention Open House with hands on fire extinguisher demonstrations and fire safety information from 3 to 6 pm.

Kenny And The Gamblers Win Golf Tournament
The Town of Hoosick Republican Party hosted its annual Golf Tournament on Sunday, September 21, at the Hoosick Falls Country Club. The tournament was great success with perfect weather, good food and lots of laughter among the golfers.
Kenny and the Gamblers was the winning team with a team score of 57. Team members were Bob Abbott, Steve Bellemare, Mike Shea and Kenny Rogers. The Straightest Drive prize was awarded to Stacey Nuccio and the Longest Drive to Kenny Rogers. Steve Bellemare took home the prize for being Closest to the Pin.

Giffy’s Chicken Bar-B-Q
The Town of Hoosick Republican Party will sponsor a Giffy’s Chicken Bar-B-Q on Thursday, October 23, at the Grand Union Parking lot. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from any Committee member or by calling the number below. There will be limited amount of extra meals, so order soon.

The Second Annual Craft Fair at the Berlin Free Town Library will be held on Saturday, November 15. All local crafters and artisans are invited to join us. Registration fee is $25 per table. All proceeds from registration fees benefit the Library. There is a limited number of spots, so register soon! Spaces must be prepaid.

New Lebanon Book Group
The New Lebanon Book Group will discuss Amy Bloom’s highly praised 2007 novel Away, at its two upcoming meetings in October and November. The First discussion will be on Sunday, October 19, at 11 am at Hitchcock House B & B, located on Route 22 in New Lebanon, 1.2 miles south of the intersection of Routes 22 and 20. The book will be discussed again on Thursday, November 6, at 7 pm at the New Lebanon Library, located at 550 Route 20 in New Lebanon. Visitors and new members are always welcome to attend.
Author Amy Bloom is a nominee for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Award for Away, which focuses on an immigrant Jewish seamstress from New York who travels across continents in search of her young daughter in Siberia.
Grafton Wine & Cheese Festival
Tickets are still available for the annual Grafton Historical Society Wine and Cheese Festival to be held at the historic Grafton Inn on Route 2 in Grafton on Saturday, October 18, from 4 to 6 pm. State and international wines, along with a wide variety of cheese and other hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, will be available for sampling. There will be a raffle, and door prizes will be awarded.

Berlin Fire Department Breakfast
On Sunday, October 5, from 7 to 11 am, the Berlin Fire Department will be holding its monthly breakfast. For your eating pleasure we include pancakes, sausage, toast, home fries and eggs (scrambled, sunny side, over easy or over hard). Beverage choices include coffee, tea, (both decaf available), hot chocolate, milk and orange juice. Prices are $6 for adults, $3 for kids 5-12 and free for kids under 5. This, as all of our breakfasts are, is an all you can eat event so come on out before church, grocery run, or what you are doing for the day and have a great start to the morning.
Don’t forget to bring your sweet tooth as the ladies auxiliary has some great baked goods for sale. Also to support another great group please bring your unwanted, returnable bottles that morning to put in the Cub Scout collection bin.
The Berlin Rescue Squad will be holding its last monthly dinner of 2008 consisting of meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a beverage and apple crisp for dessert. We will be serving this delicious meal at a cost of $8 per person on October 10, from 5 to 8 pm at the Berlin Fire House. Please call Barb Staples for advanced sales at 658-2510.
Texas Hold’em
The Veterans of Stephentown will host a Texas Hold’em Tournament at the Stephentown Fire Hall on Grange Hall Road on Saturday, October 18. Doors are open from 5 to 6 pm and play starts at 6:15. The tournament pays 8 places. A donation of $25 per player is required; 1,000 extra chips cost $10. Pay at the door. No advance registration is required. Refreshments are available. Letter to the Editor – I Told You So, But There Is Still A Referendum
To the Editor,
Is it too soon to say “I told you so”?
Do you know what’s being discussed with the Berlin Central School District (BCSD) referendum?
Did you know they are talking about only getting rid of one school principal position and one school nurse position? If we keep these salaries we could have two schools for 1/3 the cost (which includes ADA, safety and adding on)! Weren’t we supposed to save money on salaries? What’s next? Although when you “shove” an additional 200 kids into one location – are we really expecting the nurse, custodian, principal, office help, librarian and kitchen staff to all do the same job, with added duties, and still get paid the same? What is it worth to your children? How about how your tax dollars will be spent? How much are you willing to pay if what was promised is not followed through?
We need a lot of money to fix up the Berlin Elementary School (BES). We will not be spending enough money to do so, but there might be a fresh coat of paint in all the rooms to make it look like it.
What about the addition we are building onto BES? Where were they putting that again? Oh, wait ą it won’t be as big as originally discussed to taxpayers. There will be JUST ENOUGH room, so if by chance we get more than we have now there would be no room for them – so then where would they go?
Where will our kids be while the bulk of the construction is going on ą IN SCHOOL?
Are you okay with shoving kids into classrooms into what was once a closet? Are you okay with the construction happening while our kids are in the building, not knowing what lies under the surface – when mold is on the surface? Are we really saving money and at what cost?
Did you know you still have a voice in the matter?
When the referendum date is finally decided, you have a chance to vote. There is NO reason for adding on a building. SAVE TAX DOLLARS! Save our children’s health and education! Which way will you decide to vote? I will be voting NO!
