During the April 14 Hoosick Town Board meeting the Board approved a resolution transferring $40,000 from Fund Balance to establish the Hoosick Pool Rehabilitation Fund. The Board was in agreement that repairs to the Pool will not be completed this summer. Supervisor Surdam said anyone is welcome to visit the Town website and “see what we see.”

On Wednesday, April 23, at 7 pm, the HAYC3 Community Coalition will hold an important Town Hall Meeting at the HAYC3 Armory in Hoosick Falls regarding the recent rise in heroin, prescription drug and other substance abuse in our community. Parents, youth, community leaders and members are invited to attend and become better informed about the current trends in the existence and usage of illegal substances right here at home.

On Tuesday firefighters made quick work of a fire at Taconic in Petersburgh. The fire began at around 6 am in the exhaust ductwork and extended to materials that were stored on the floor at Building 1. The Petersburgh Fire Department and Ambulance, the Berlin Fire Department and the Grafton Fire Department were on the scene for about 90 minutes.

The Berlin Town Board meeting on Thursday, April 10, seemed uneventful on its surface, but on reflection several important, long-standing issues were discussed. Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger reported on the pre-workshop meeting on March 27 with the Petersburgh Town Board in which the Boards discussed Petersburgh’s contract for use of the Berlin transfer station. At the Grafton Town Board meeting on Monday Highway Superintendent Herb Hasbrouck said there was an incident with one of the Town trucks about a month ago. A Town 2000 International single axle dump truck was forced off the road by a reckless driver in a car, and the truck rolled over onto its side. The insurance company declared the truck unrepairable, so it must be replaced. The Town Board voted unanimously to seek bids for a replacement truck immediately.

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold an open house and recruitment drive at our fire station on Route 43 Saturday, April 26, from 10 am to 2 pm. The event will allow the fire department a chance to highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter. The Music and Art Café will present Duo Eamon on Friday, April 25, at 7 pm at the Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center. Duo Eamon is the Williamstown-based duet comprised of Cassandra Cleghorn on fiddle and Jeffrey Levine on guitar. Their newly released CD, Duo Eamon, will be available. Tickets cost $5.

There will be an Australian All You Can Eat Benefit Breakfast for Alissa Babcock on Sunday, April 27, from 8 to 11 am at the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church. Say g’day and cheerio to Alissa Babcock while enjoying a full spread of pancakes, eggs, bacon, biscuits with sausage and gravy, home fries, coffee, juice and milk for just $10. Children five and under eat free.
The program tuition to visit Australia as a Student Ambassador is about $7,000, which includes meals, transportation, accommodations and educational activities. This event is intended to assist with a portion of the tuition.
